Taro,

Fast Time great movie, excellent soundtrack, but wasn't the GoGos song called " Sleeping"?  By the way I'm saving Oingo Biongo's song "Goodbye, Goodbye" for the last song on this list.

As to Edie Brickell, Paul Simon's wife's song What I Am is an awesome song but it came out in 1988.  She is definitely Alt, but is she New Wave?

I'd choose China by Red Rocker, but real interesting nomination.

Ukbev I added Murray Head to the list.

Ho-Chi, Love the Smitereens

I'm going a little more obscure

245) Visage - Fade to Grey - GA

246) B-Movie - Nowhere Girl - GA

247) Wire Train - Chamber of Hellos - GA

248) Josie Cotton - Johnny, Are You ? - GA (Taro, if you can Devo's Jocko....)

249) XTC - Dear God - GA (Just watched the Rockumentary of the band on the Movie Channel - Andy Partridge is a very unique person).

Both songs are in the movie. The opening credits & the beginning of the mall scene have "We Got the Beat" blaring.

As to the Q about Edie & mates, another one in the "gray area" IMHO.

Great list so far! Some of the artists on the list could go 5 songs deep, 10 deep, 20 deep or more- just so many great tracks. I have many thousands on my new wave playlist. But here are some essential tracks/artists I didn't yet see here:

Style Council - My Ever Changing Moods

Dramarama - Anything

Bryan Ferry - Kiss and Tell

Blow Monkeys - Digging Your Scene

The Church - Unguarded Moment

Lloyd Cole - Rattlesnakes

Danny Wilson - Mary's Prayer

Specials - Ghost Town

Go Betweens - Streets of Your Town

Housemartins - Happy Hour

Devo - Whip It or Girl You Want

Split Enz- I Got You

Gang of Four - I Love a Man in Uniform or At Home He's a Tourist

Altered Images - I Could Be Happy or Happy Birthday or See Those Eyes

Cocteau Twins - Sugar Hiccup

Heaven 17 - Let Me Go

Naked Eyes - Always Something There To Remind Me

Kajagoogoo - too shy

Bronski Beat - Why

Trans-X - Living on Video

Erasure - Chains of Love

Killing Joke - Eighties

Jesus & Mary Chain - Head On

Camper Van Beethoven - Take the Skinheads Bowling

Sinead O Connor - Mandinka

10,000 Maniacs - Like The Weather - or are 10,000 Maniacs not new wavy enough? I dunno, I saw you had REM in there.

I can see why you'd cut off around 87 because by then New Wave was starting to transition into Alternative and College Rock.

A big fat welcome to our newest goofball named Eddie.

Nice contribution to this listing.

Thank you guys. I've been on this site for many years as just a reader/lurker but when I saw this thread I knew I had to finally post!

Yes, please, to both.

I’m Gonna Be, The Proclaimers?

And, GA ... what a body of work!

Thanks, Neo.  I had my own list, but thanks to the people here I've discovered Lene Lovich and re-discovered others.  I also build my list more from the synth pop/Dance music angle and less post punk.  I'm thrilled with all the post-punk nominations.  Should we stop at 300 songs?

Love the song, but like Edie Brickell and 10,000 Maniacs it's kind of just past my time limit.  I'm not adverse to adding them to the list, bit I'd like some other opinions.

No, Ho-Chi.  Just, no.

:P

Just no.  To poppy.  Their early work maybe.  I did just add Kyrie to another playlist I'm working on.

I'll update the list later tonight.

Fair enough. I knew it was very much on the borderline.

(At least I didn't go with my initial choice...Silent Running from Mike and the Mechanics! )

Also a great song, but not even close to new wave.

Posted

Ho Chi Sok already had it earlier, so replace 218 with Bronski Beat- Small Town Boy

And Dear God is not new wave. Just my take.

Killing Joke - Requim is a good tune.

Killing Joke - Requim is a good tune.

Last I looked XTC is a serious new wave band and Dear God was the song the actually made them famous.

I'm confused about the reference to 218?  Are you saying we have a dup of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus?  I'll check.  Checked.  You are correct!  Change will be made.

Ok, So I got through your list. Some real interesting choices and great additions to our list.  Maniacs, Sinead, & Go Betweens are great Alt music, but just to late for this list. Also no to Danny Wilson to pop.

I've add Lloyd Cole to the bottom of the list.  I'm not sure if he is really new wave.  I'll ask other posters for advice on him.

I'm adding

Martha and the Muffins - Echo Beach

Blondie - One Way or Another.

B-52's - Love Shack

Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes

Anyone interested in Total Coelo's I Eat Cannibals? and/or Wide Boy Awake Chicken Outlaw?

24 songs to 300?  Stop there or keep going?  If we stop there Oingo Biongo's Goodbye, Goodbye is the 300th song.

I guess, but that album was such its own thing, that I never actually consider it New Wave, especially that song.

Went and listened to the whole thing on CD yesterday (no Dear God on the original release). It still holds up. It was a must listen to any sound recording major in the late 80s early 90s.

I'd like to add the following

1) Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't it Be Good - GA

2) The Bongos - Numbers with Wings - GA  (Removed Duplicate)

3) The Dave Edmunds Band - Girls Talk - GA

I have to say those are pretty good songs to be this far down on our list.

Neo, Just heard the Proclaimers on 1st Wave.

Also Swamp, missed the Killing Joke Requiem reference.  I'm adding that as well.

At the end of the list I'm also adding

Howard Jones - New Song - GA

Pet Shop Boys - Opportunities - GA

Duran Duran - Union of the Snake - GA

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Cities in Dust -GA

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence - GA

Adam Ant - Ant Music - GA

Real Life - Send Me an Angel

Oingo Biongo - Goodbye, Goodbye

Murphy was in Bauhaus  but this song is a couple of years to late.

I'm going to add

Total Coelo - I Eat Cannibals

Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue

Icehouse - Electric Blue

Anyone have a China Crisis song that they love?

Edited by GASabresIUFAN

Electric Avenue is most certainly not New Wave.

(I actually think there is a lot on that list that isn't New Wave.)

I thought so to. I think of him as pop and reggae, but this song was on a New Wave Compilation album I have. I like the song.

Holy everlovin' potatoes, that list is a thing of beauty. Maybe a dozen I'm not familiar with (although I recognize all the artists) and half that many that I might have left off, but I could happily drive from here to my mom's house in Hamburg with that playing all the way.

I can remember hearing some of the more obscure artists on WUWU/WZIR back in the day - they really shaped my musical taste at an impressionable time in my music-listening life.
