NS,

One of the things about “new wave” is that it means different things to different people. You seem to have come to it through Punk Rock, so do many people, which is probably why you hate the The La’s. I came to it from Prog Rock and Glam Rock. I’m a huge Bowie fan and bands/singers like Bowie, Roxy Music, Peter Gabriel (ex Genesis) and Elvis Costello brought me into New Wave. Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno come from Roxy Music. Eno produced Bowie, Talking Heads and Devo. So for me Gabriel (who definitely went new wave), Bowie (who also moved that direction) and Roxy Music are always part on my new wave play list.

I’m actually surprised I haven’t seen the Runaways and Joan Jett or even the Go-Go’s (considering their punk roots) from you yet. Then again, no one has mentioned U2 yet either. I’m also surprised on how few Duran Duran, Blondie, Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, or INXS songs we have. I’ll probably add more Bowie, like China Girl and Heroes.

Bauhaus does a great Ziggy Stardust cover by the way.

Right now I’ll add:

Ultravox - Reap the Wild Wind

Yello - Oh Yeah

The Waitresses - I Know What Boys Like

Posted

Point of order: It's me who hates the La's.

What the heck are the La's?

I stand corrected.

:flirt:  ;)

And you are correct that I came to New Wave directly from Punk.  It was a natural and seemless transition.

That said, I am a Punk Rocker ... just like my sister Sheena.

The La’s are a one hit wonder on the Poppy end of new wave.

Boy, that cellist sure lost the fight with that can of Aquenet.

She's personally responsible for a third of the hole in the ozone layer.

The original version of Our Lips Are Sealed by Fun Boy Three is much better than that other one you mentioned.

The song was written by a Go-Go and a guy from Fun Boy Three, but the Go-Gos 1981 version is the original vs the 1983 Fun Boys Three version.

Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode

The Body Electric - Rush

Saved by Zero - The Fixx

Rush?

Well, the Fun Boy Three version is better.

And that guy was none other than Terry Hall of The Specials and Fun Boy Three fame.  And a few others after Fun Boy Three, as well.

Good choices Matt and Swamp.  I added them except Rush.  I love Rush, but they aren't exactly New Wave.

NS, I put a note next to the GoGos Our Lips are Sealed for you.

A few more possibilities:

The Alarm - Rain in the Summertime

Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter

Berlin - Sex

Blondie - Call Me

Boom Town Rats - Up All Night (the fact that Jim Rome likes it should not disqualify it)

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians - What I Am

The Jim Carroll Band - People Who Died

The Clash - Rock the Casbah

The Clash - Lost in the Supermarket

Devo - Jocko

Elvis Costello - Allison

Elvis Costello - Watching the Detectives

FYC - Johnny Come Home

The Fixx - Red Skies at Night

The Fixx - Stand or Fall

Go-go's - We Got The Beat (seriously, did no one ever see Fast Times?)

Billy Idol - Rebel Yell

The Jam - The Modern World

Payola$ - I'll Find Another

Payola$ - Stuck in the Rain

Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe

Squeeze - Black Coffee in Bed

Though there are some really great songs that haven't been included yet from some of the other bands you've listed, didn't add songs from bands I don't consider "new wave." Would be really interested in seeing if we could define "new wave" at least for ourselves because it seems we have at a minimum 6 definitions of it.

I think of new wave as two things really

1) Post Punk - As bands like the Clash, Talking Heads, Ramones started making more sophisticated music, even Blondie, and the GoGos came from this direction

2) Synth Pop - Band, many from UK that added a great deal of synthesizers to their music,  David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel but also music that was dance-able and stemmed from Disco, but had some of the hard lyrics from Punk.

I also think these sounds kind of merged along the way.  I think the best image of this split is the movie 1981's Valley Girl.  Nick Cage's character comes from the bad part of town and he is listening to Punk and Post Punk in his bars, while the Valley Girls are listening to Synth Pop. Cage's character even comments on it in the movie.  I think the era is 1976 to 1987 with some bands like an REM, Depeche Mode, Police or U2 doing well into the 90's.

Have a hard time including the Ramones as New Wave (they're punk). And Bowie & Gabriel are progressive. Costello IMHO bridges that divide. But it's kind of fun to have 30 year old debates once again. And, back in '88 a lot of bands that are now called "new wave" were going under the mantel of "progressive" though that was what described Genesis, Floyd, Kansas, Yes, & the like.

In my circle, back then, new wave was Yaz, Thd Cure, Depeche Mode, Howard Jones, etc. Probably a narrower definition than accurate but fair.

Listen to Gabriel's albums after Genesis.  Songs like Games Without Frontiers to Shock the Monkey, I have the touch to Sledgehammer and Don't Give Up (with Kate Bush) are truly alt music.  Most still told a story, but the long musical interludes were gone.  Most of the songs also have a harder edge to them that Genesis's story telling.  I write this from the heart because Genesis (pre and post PG) is probably my all time favorite band and to me the difference between Peter Gabriel Genesis and Peter Gabriel Solo are solar systems apart.  Compare Gabriel solo and to the pop song of Phil Collins solo and I think you'll hear what I mean.

Bowie was never progressive, but Glam certainly.  I agree he is hard to classify because he was an artist who always moved with the times.  China Girl, Modern Love, Let's Dance is really all electronic dance music.  Hereos, Ashes to Ashes all fit the post punk/synth pop feel.

Looking back on it now, bands like REM, U2, Police, The Cars, etc all crossed over to mainstream pop stations, which blurs that line.  My definition is really the music that the college station played when I was in school in the early to mid 80's.  Music that wasn't Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, Hall & Oates, Elton John, The Who, Zeppelin, or Metal and also not Genesis, Yes, Superstramp, Rush, Styx etc...

By the way I agree generally on the Ramones and even the Violent Femmes are not "new wave" artists per se, but their music really paved the way for the post punk part of new wave. I don't think of Iggy Pop generally as new wave as well, but when he was hanging with Bowie he came out with Lust For Life in the late 70's and that sound is new wave to me at least.
