Doohicksie Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 I doubt it, but it will be available next season. Even Jack started out with 41, didn't he? Quote
darksabre Posted March 27, 2018 Author Report Posted March 27, 2018 I doubt it, but it will be available next season. Even Jack started out with 41, didn't he? In training camp. They never subjected him to that crap in real games. Quote
LGR4GM Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 I doubt it, but it will be available next season. Even Jack started out with 41, didn't he? That was before Botterill was GM. Quote
Eleven Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 So is this really true, Rip issuing numbers? Or is it an urban legend. I suppose it's true, and it goes to my longstanding point about a sort of "deep state" surrounding the Sabres. The whole coterie of people who can never be fired, who continue to poison the well of Sabres hockey, needs to go. The medical staff, the trainers, the equipment guys, media relations, alumni, broadcasters — president after president, they are immovable. (A few have come and gone, sure. Most have remained. Imagine Larry Playfair and Danny Gare and Rob regaling the kids with woeful tales of past defeats.) The common belief is that Rip was issuing numbers but that the current administration has put a stop to that. I doubt it, but it will be available next season. Even Jack started out with 41, didn't he? Jack insisted that he not receive #15 unless and until he made the team out of camp. Quote

Doohicksie Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 Jack insisted that he not receive #15 unless and until he made the team out of camp. Exactly. Even our projected franchise player got a "prospect number" in the beginning. I think we shouldn't attach too much importance to the number Casey receives for a cup-of-coffee call up. Quote
Mustache of God Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 I've never been bothered by players being assigned numbers and don't understand the hullabaloo about the topic. Quote
darksabre Posted March 27, 2018 Author Report Posted March 27, 2018 I've never been bothered by players being assigned numbers and don't understand the hullabaloo about the topic. Because it's amateur hour BS from the no-fun police. It's a joke to be gate-keeping numbers from players on a team that has never won a damn thing. Let players wear whatever numbers they want. Quote
Doohicksie Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 On the other hand, getting a "real" number can be used as a rite of passage or recognition that a prospect has made the transition to the NHL. It could be part of the PROCESS. Quote
darksabre Posted March 27, 2018 Author Report Posted March 27, 2018 (edited) That's for a**holes. Edited March 27, 2018 by darksabre Quote
DarthEbriate Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 Once you make it to the big league (not dev camp) and you're playing a real NHL game... you should be able to choose any open number on your team's list. It's yours and you've earned it... whether you're a temporary call-up or a top pick, or you've just been acquired in a trade deadline swap. You're on this team, you choose any number. And if you're some big-time established player and you want to purchase your number from someone else, go for it. There are loads of open numbers. It's not like a football roster with required numbers for ineligible receivers or reserved numbers for QB/K/P. You've made it, you're entitled to a number you like. (I say this because once upon a time I was told I was a 5 because that's what was left. What a crap prime number! Then the next season I was higher up the chain and got to select 12. I was much prouder. But also a much worse baseball player that season because I took one in the eye and couldn't hit worth a darn for awhile.) But I was happier with my uniform. Quote
pi2000 Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 #10 That would be Josefson. Long term I think CM settles on #22 (after Larsson is launched this offseason). Quote
Brawndo Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 37, Im thinking 37 Me thinks someone saw the Sabres Tweet. Why 37 though? Quote
Mustache of God Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 Me thinks someone saw the Sabres Tweet. Why 37 though? To pay homage to Matty "Stones for Hands" Ellis. It's ironic. Kids love irony these days. Quote

bcsaberks Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 Me thinks someone saw the Sabres Tweet. Why 37 though? He sad on WGR a friend suggested it. All his old #s were taken. Schopp suggested Bergeron as best ever #37 and he agreed "yeah, thought of him". I'm struggling with his choice of shirt here. Did he borrow it from Terry? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DZUYOOaVMAAlpii.jpg:large Quote
