tom webster Posted August 27, 2019 Report Posted August 27, 2019 It’s not hard to imagine 40,000 cars coming into downtown in the morning or exiting in the afternoon. Bumper to bumper the 33 can hold up to 10,000 cars alone. Im sure one our analytics experts can write an equation showing how many cars going roughly 30 miles per hour along an 8.6 mile stretch of highway for about one hour and fifteen minutes would equal to. Right, and keep in mind that just like a football game, people are coming and going during roughly a 2.5-3 hour period in the mornings and evenings. Some people get to work at 9am; some people get to the game at 1130 am. Some people get to work at 730 am; some people get to the game at 9am to tailgate. Etc. Quote

LGR4GM Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 They are going to bulldoze the perry projects and put it there. They will extend the train down South Park to a stop somewhere close by. Probably make a stop for the casino and the stadium or a combined stop for them. There is enough land and they could use existing sabres lots and ramps plus whatever they build for the stadium. They will then fix infrastructure to get you out and onto the 190 or up to the 33. It will probably flow better than Orchard Park. This is my opinion of what they will do. Blue is the train line. Red is the rough outline of a stadium (65K people), the purple with lines is the new area to get on and off the 190. The other purple is new parking lots. I think roughly that is what they will do depending on how many of the businesses they can move out they may do more. I tried to estimate the size of the stadium to the scale of the current building. 2 Quote

The Pegulas (through 3rd parties/ shell corporations) have bought a lot of land in the city. The new stadium will be built there. Want to say it was around the Perry Projects is where they were buying the land, but don't recall exactly where they were buying up land. Just know it was NOT at Cobblestone. Should be seeing my source of that info in a month or 2. Will post if the person tells me again where that is. Quote
... Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 Well, I gave it a quick try. Can not find the number of cars going into downtown Buffalo every week day. Still don't believe it's 40k. Quote

... Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 (edited) That's more than double a capacity KeyBank Centre. And people double-up, at least, with rides going there, if they don't use the train. If you multiply by over 4x the amount of traffic and people roaming around prior to a game, it doesn't seem to me to equate the traffic and population filling into downtown Buffalo daily. So 90% of Buffalo's commuting is done by car. Let's assume 85% of Buffalo's commuter jobs are in the downtown area since that's easily the most job dense part of the city, and then let's assume that (based on the data) 85% of those 90% of commuters are driving alone in a car, you're looking at about 30,000 people going straight into the downtown part of the city every day by themselves in a car. Does +30,000 look better to you? Quote

It's not like 40,000 cars is a huge amount. Quote

That makes 40,000+ cars coming into downtown every day much more plausible if say 67,000 people come into the city limits for work every day and 20,000 leave it. Play with that balance however you like. Quote

In a metro population of 1.1M, I don't see how 40,000 driving in and out of the financial and governmental center of that metro area is difficult to believe. At all. 2 Quote
LGR4GM Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 In Athens, GA a town of 127k ppl can explode to 200k+ people for a game day, I'm sure they can manage 40k cars in dt buffalo. Quote

I'm not saying 30k people, I'm saying 30k vehicles based on the number of people. That said, Eleven's point about the difference being a net + means that the total of people is likely much higher, and therefore the number of cars as well. 40k cars looks reasonable. Quote

To be clear, this started with cars. Not all people coming in drive solo, and some do actually use public transport. I might accept 40k people without saying anything, but 40k cars needing a place to park in downtown? No. Quote
