Randall Flagg Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 We can officially sink to last place tonight. If someone had said before the season that between Vegas and Buffalo, February 22nd would see one team at first in the league and one team in last place, how would you have reacted? Weave Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 (edited) Two words: Steve Yzerman. Playoffs in his 4th year. Lost in the Conference finals. Edited February 22, 2018 by We've Quote
Doohicksie Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 (edited) Right, but the Red Wings were a pretty sad franchise for the first half of his career. Kind of where the Sabres were prior to the tank- playoff purgatory- often a playoff team, rarely a real contender. He didn't win a Cup until his 14th year in the league. Red Wings attendance was so bad in the early Yzerman era that they gave away a car at EVERY game to boost attendance. Edited February 22, 2018 by Anordning Quote

And playoffs in the 6th as well. the bottom dropped out again for awhile afterward, but they were a playoff team when Y was 22-24 yrs old. Quote

At a time when teams played the 1st 2 rounds in division, they got to play in the f###ing Norris. Even friggin' SI which could not care less about hockey (Gretzky mildly excepted) ran an article about how awful the division was. That 1st year, not even ONE SINGLE TEAM played 0.500 hockey out of 5. The next year, Detroit's record looked reasonable (41-28-11 - 93 for 5th best in the NHL) but they played THIRTY TWO of 80 against teams that finished with 76, 68, 52, & 51 points. The team that only accumulated 52 points took Detroit to 7 games that 1st round. Yes, it took them SEVEN games to win 4 against the 2nd worst team in the league. They followed those seasons with a 1st place 0.500 season & a 1st round exit to a 66 point Blackhawk team & then missed the playoffs the next year w/ 70 points. They weren't called the Dead Things for nothing. IMHO, they weren't "good" until '91-'92 & weren't even considered a contender until '92-'93. Those were Yzerman's 9th & 10th years. When 16 of 21 make the playoffs, AND your division ALWAYS has at least 1 of the 3 worst teams, it's not a huge accomplishment to make the playoffs, again, IMHO. Quote

Robviously Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 Really stupid to play Kane tonight. Quote
Radar Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 (edited) Really stupid to play Kane tonight. Agree. Can't imagine why they would. Other than it's the Sabres. Frankly surprised that Botterill is having him play. First occasion I've had to question him as our GM.These are meaningless games. Sorry seems stupid. Edited February 23, 2018 by Radar Quote
Thorner Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 I don't like the sound of what is coming out of this organization right now. It seems like they are preparing the fan-base for another couple years of pain. It stinks that Eichel will probably waste on this team for another couple years before his talents even mean anything. I would not bring up any of the young talent next year because chances are, this team is preparing for another step back before moving forward. At least the royal blues will be back in time for what may be the first run at a playoff spot in a while. This, at the end of the day, is far and away the most sad and disappointing thing about the state of the Sabres. It was eloquently stated on hfboards that there is only one outcome in which this game will be remembered by a single fan any time later than three months from now, and that outcome is if Evander Kane gets hurt. This is what it has come to. Thanks, Terry. The Rangers aren’t playing Nash. Mind boggling decision from Botterill, here. Quote
hockeyhound Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 Let's Go Buffalo! See if we can win 20 games this year. Quote
Tondas Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 At least we get RJ And Rob Ray with his 3 syllable De-Troy-It. Quote
inkman Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 Why can't the Sabres figure out how to remedy a player losing a stick when their bench empties into the same zone. slide, rotate, get stick or new player. So dumb. Quote
darksabre Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 Detroit is bad. I liked the screen on that goal. Quote
