Brawndo Posted February 20, 2018 Author Report Posted February 20, 2018 #Sabres GM Jason Botterill: “Jake has been progressing well in his recovery from his previous injury, but we decided that this was a good opportunity to take care of a problem that he has been dealing with for a while." Sounds like a separate injury from the hand Quote
Taro T Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 Out 4-6 Months per Sabres Didn't it look more like a hand when he left midgame? Maybe he's been bothered by a shoulder most of the season & that's why he's looked so bad so ofter this year? (Purely speculating there.) #Sabres GM Jason Botterill: “Jake has been progressing well in his recovery from his previous injury, but we decided that this was a good opportunity to take care of a problem that he has been dealing with for a while." LTS Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 This is why Housley kept shouldering the blame for their performance? He couldn't put it on McCabe's shoulders. I wonder if the whole team needs surgery. Quote

Mustache of God Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 (edited) So how's our defense look now? Risto- Scandella Gorges - Nelson Baloo - Antipin Is it time to call up Guhle or probably Tennyson? also: woof. Edited February 20, 2018 by Mustasch av gud Quote

Risto- Scandella Gorges - Nelson Baloo - Antipin Is it time to call up Guhle or probably Tennyson? also: woof. Nah, there's nothing any other defenseman in the system can do to help at this point. Risto and Scandella are a solid #2 pair on a good team. Nelson and Antipin are solid 3rd pair guys. Beauloeauoeuou is borderline NHL material. Gorges should be retired. So we're missing two top-pair NHL defensemen. Quote

If Sabres can draft Dhalin and get Ghule ready maybe next year they will be close to an NHL D... not on offense but at least D Quote
Thorner Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 Kinda feels like a tanking move. Interesting. Could be, depending on the actual time frame of the injury. They said 4-6 months. Most likely that’s legitimate, and shutting McCabe down makes sense as, if it takes the full 6 months, shutting him down now ensures he’s back for next season. My question is, why didn’t they elect to proceed with the surgery earlier, at the time of the hand injury? Looks like maybe they saw it as a 4 month recovery time for the shoulder, that he could come back from the hand, finish the season, then have the shoulder surgery in April, making it back for camp. It’s impossible to know either way. I wouldn’t call it tanking per se, but potentially a move by Botterill that says, “he could come back this year, but what’s the point, let’s save McCabe the struggle and help ensure a higher pick”. If they shut Eichel down, it’s smelling like a mini-tank. Quote

DarthEbriate Posted February 21, 2018 Report Posted February 21, 2018 Are there people that think Bogo is a first-pair D? By salary and draft-day potential, sure. By the eye test and career stats: no. Legit first-pair D don't build fully-stocked bunkers. (His best season statistically was 2011-12 with 5-25-30 at 23 min/gm. Other than that 22 min/gm and <5 goals, <20 assists per season. 2nd-pairing stay-at-home guy, despite his decent speed.) Quote

I see his skill set better suited to 3rd pair, but either way, with his proclivity to be hurt all the time, 3rd pairing is the max he should be penciled in for/counted on for the final 2 years of his god-awful contract. Agreed. I had listed his career numbers -- 22 min/night is his average, so... 2nd pairing with plenty of PK has been his usage. Quote

Would say that in an ideal world where he plays 76+ games/ season, he is a 2nd pairing D-man. But we are absolutely in agreement that in THIS world, he can NOT be pencilled in above 5, if he's even pencilled in at all. He can't be counted on for more than 30 (yes, he's almost always played more than that, but an injury-prone D-man isn't going to start playing MORE games than he has historically played and likely will play significantly less as injuries become chronic). Losing the guy that was pencilled in at 3 severely hampered this squad out of the gate. Quote

And, it must be said, his injury history has turned him from being an asset obtained in the Kane trade to being part of the price GMTM had to pay to get Kane. Quote
