The Kinks tune needs to be The Destroyer.

Like most great bands there are so many classic songs, it's nearly impossible to select just one.

Added

Kiss - Rock & Roll All Night

Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth

Grateful Dead - Casey Jones

Grand Fun Railroad - We're An American Band - love this song

Bachman-Turner Overdrive - You Ain't Seen Nothin Yet

Blood, Sweat and Tears - Spinning Wheel

Blink-182 - All the Small Things

Alice In Chains - Man In A Box

Smashing Pumpkins - 1979

War - Low Rider

King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man

Simple Minds - Don't You (the 80's anthem?)

Disagree with GFR......... It's gotta be  "I'm your Captain-Closer to Home"

Also Grateful Dead......... Although that's a good choice "Truckin' " or "Hell in a Bucket" would be my choices

I first read this list as a “forgotten tracks by the great artists” and I was all “wait, wait, wait, this list is all wrong. This list is hits.” The Beatles’ would then need an earlier- and later-phase song… like “I’ve Just Seen a Face” and “I’ve Got a Feeling”.

So I kind of split my notes as best of and forgotten. I offer up:

Tom Petty – American Girl

Talking Heads – Psycho Killer and Once in a Lifetime (from Stop Making Sense); or if you’re going forgotten The Great Curve or Born Under Punches (from The Name of This Band is Talking Heads) or The Big Country

Led Zeppelin – you’ve got it with Immigrant Song. But forgotten: Out on the Tiles

Prince – Purple Rain or Baby I’m a Star; forgotten: P Control

Dave Matthews Band – #41

Parliament – Flash Light; forgotten: Motor Booty Affair or Unfunky UFO

Funkadelic – One Nation Under a Groove; forgotten: Maggot Brain (live version on One Nation)

Kinks – you’ll need two; one from the early fuzz (You Really Got Me/All Day and All of the Night) and one from later

The list is actually the best song by the best bands/artists from the 60-90s with a couple of other favorites thrown in.

The list is mostly rock/pop - metal, prog, hard, some soft, some folkish, with some R&B cross over like Aretha Franklin’s respect or September by Earth Wind and Fire. I’m building this list seperate from my Funk It Up playlist where bands like Parliament reside.

My endorsements in blue bold.  That doesn't mean I don't like the others, it's just that I either don't feel strongly about them or not familiar with them.

I need to add the James Gang, Joe Walsh, Jeff Beck, Robert Plant, Frampton, John Fogerty, and Faces. Paul Simon’s wife is a one hit wonder, but it’s a great song. Squeeze is also interesting. 2 great songs, but are they “sponge worthy”?

Blind Faith is already on the list.

Just heard a Vanilla Fudge version of the Supreme’s You Keep Me Hangin On. It’s great. It sounds like Bowied and Hendrix got together and reformulated the song to suit their guitar and singing styles.

Squeeze is one of the underappreciated bands of ever.

I have been listening to the list in car. Too much 70s music. I haven’t actually dug through the songs by release date, but that it how it feels when I was listening. I’m thinking a redo with 50 songs per decade.

This will allow bands with long careers and good music in multiple decades, to have multiple songs on the list and I’m going to eliminate the one and two hit wonders.

So, some '90's -ish stuff (most of which wasn't previously mentioned; not going to go back through to verify; it's your list, you can do it if you'd like :p)

Everclear: Father of Mine

The Offspring: Come Out & Play or, (as you don't like hard stuff as much IIRC) Self Esteem

Incubus: Drive

Rage Against the Machine: Bulls on Parade

Rusted Root: Ecstacy

Cake: The Distance

Eagle Eyed Cherry: Save Tonight

Temple of the Dog: Hunger Strike

Stone Temple Pilots: Interstate Love Song

Tonic: You Wanted More; or If You Could Only See (probably not the actual title)

Edwin Starr: A Girl Like You

Fastball: The Way

Smash Mouth: All Star

7 Mary 3: Mighty Casey

Filter: Nice Shot

Linkin' Park: there's a few to choose from

& a few random older ones: (apologies for any duplicates)

Yello: Oh, Yeah

Mike & the Mechanics: Silent Running

Billy Thorpe: Children of the Sun

Robert Plant: Big Log

Wow!  I couldn't agree more!  I woke up to that song one morning in Winnipeg close to 40 years ago.  It was like some kind of religious experience.  I have never forgotten that, even after all these years.

Apologies if already mentioned, but other songs that have left a permanent positive impact on me back when I was a young kid are Tommy James and The Shondells doing "Crimson and Clover", and "In the Jungle" by The Tokens.

Genesis - Invisible Touch

The Beatles - In My Life

Led Zeppelin - 10 Years Gone / What Is and What Should Never Be

I still think the greatest song ever recorded is Beast of Burden, and IMO this list can't be remotely complete without Queen and The Clash

Never really liked Kashmir

Finally somebody that agrees with me on Kashmir. I have never understood why many people consider it their favorite Zeppelin song. There are dozens I would pick before it. I liked their early albums the best but over time have warmed up to several songs from Physical Graffiti and Presence.
