I have a very extensive music collection and I tend to build playlists from the Library to discover lost tracks or simply to have some fun. I’ve done New Wave, British Invasion, Ladies Names, One Word Titles, Colors, Funk It Up and even Days of the Week. I’m now building a best of the best rock/pop playlist. My goal is to choose 1 song from most of the best bands/artists from the 60s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s with a couple of other great songs thrown in from lesser acts.

For example:
Hotel California is my favorite song from the Eagles. However, I’m having a terrible time choosing just one song from the Beatles, the Who and Led Zeppelin. I broke down and choose two songs from Genesis; one with Peter Gabriel (Lamb Lies Down on Broadway) and one from Phil Collins (Follow You, Follow Me), because they have such different sounds.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’d love to see suggestions for bands/artists songs. My goal would be to get to about 200-250 songs. Should I make some polls?

Genesis - Invisible Touch

The Beatles - In My Life

Led Zeppelin - 10 Years Gone / What Is and What Should Never Be

I still think the greatest song ever recorded is Beast of Burden, and IMO this list can't be remotely complete without Queen and The Clash

Never really liked Kashmir

Great to see another true Supertramp fan. Crime of the Century and Even in the Quietest Moments are 2 of my all time favorite albums. School is definitely the choice. I’m also with you on Sympathy for the Devil, Aqualung and Roxanne.

Suffergette City is my favorite Bowie song, but I’m leaning toward Changes or China Girl for the playlist.

I suspect you've seen this then?  Utterly amazing.

Or... you could go right off the reservation and pick something from Crisis?  What Crisis? for Supertramp.

They still are amazing. Saw then the Breakfast in America tour and againon Brother Where You Bound tour. Dreamer’s not a bad choice either.

Obviously U and I have similar music taste.

Just saw Edgar Winter, Alice Cooper and Deep Purple together. Cooper is a great showman. He has an amazing lady guitarist in his band.

I was all excited because I've been listening to a ton of classicAL (and Romantic era) music lately. There's so much good stuff out there on youtube it's incredible. Here's a good one.

Deep Purple was an early favorite of mine.  Lazy from the Made in Japan album is one of my favorite songs.  (The studio version on Machine Head is good, but I like the live version better.)

I like classical as well. My favorite is Aram Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance.

That’s a little to far off the reservation.

The video is a great example of why the Rock Hall in Cleveland simply doesn’t understand the great musicians and orchestrations in all the Progressive Rock bands and their music. When you can take a rock song and it sounds amazing with an orchestra, you have something special.

So, being an extreme Zep fan since middle school I recognize the band has many hits and deep cuts. The one song I can put on repeat and play 5x in a row is Battle of Evermore. It isn't their biggest hit be a country mile, but the song has everything you would want to remember the band for.

I pull up old Genesis and Yes and ELP albums on Youtube once in a while and musically they are just so full and interesting.  I'm not musically trained, but there's so much to absorb and consider in the music alone, even without the lyrics.  Back in the olden days.....

In My Time of Dying is amazing too.

The thing that really pisses me off about SiriusXM is how they pick a playlist from an artist- typically 2-6 of their biggest songs- and play those songs and NO OTHERS.  You get tired of the artist's best stuff and never get to hear other songs that weren't as popular.

Yeah, that never satisfies either.  It's like they either play all the hits or they play the songs from popular artists that never got any airplay at all.  Seems like there's no in between.
