Brawndo Posted January 15, 2018 Report Posted January 15, 2018 One of the best debates the board has been having is the what was the causes of the dearth of prospects in the pipeline. I was also interested in seeing what difference the change to video scouting had on drafting success. The change occurred in 2006. So I decided to look at Hockey Data Base which not only shows who was drafted but also his total number of games played. The Sabres had three years 2000,2005 and 2006 where their first round pick did not play a single NHL Game. Two seasons 1999(10 games) and 2007 (53 Games) had less than a full season. The Post Video Scouting starting in 2006 had a mix bag. 2008 seemed to be the best with the Two Tylers and 2010 the worse with only Pysyk making the NHL. There were some late round finds Miller in the 5th in 1999, and Gaustad in the 7th in 2000. It appears around 2009 the Sabres Draft Class Quality started to decline under Regier. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/teams/dr00005054.html Quote
Two or less Posted January 15, 2018 Report Posted January 15, 2018 I remember how ecstatic this board was in 2009 with Kassian. He was going to be to us what Lucic was to Boston. I think 2009 draft was okay though, besides Kassian. McNabb and Foligno also picked while not having a second round pick. In 2012, i think one of the biggest issues there was, we needed centers desperately, so Darcy took who he thought was the best and i think the development of both players poor, Grigorenko should have returned to the Q while Zemgus to college. In any case, i think that was a weak draft. Zemgus was picked 14th overall and ranks as 8th in NHL games played of all players drafted that year. Quote
Stoner Posted January 15, 2018 Report Posted January 15, 2018 Good post. Video scouting started before 2006. According to the following link from summer of 2006, two years before. The Sabres over the past two years have forsaken hockey doctrine. http://www.hockeyforum.com/nhl-forum/1409-sabres-review-scouting-go-video.html Quote
