WildCard
"One of the things that just did not make sense is the promise to re-sign Thomas Vanek if someone came out with an offer sheet," Briere said, "because for a cheaper price than it cost them to keep Thomas Vanek, they could've signed Chris and I and gotten four first-round picks from the Edmonton Oilers." http://buffalonews.com/2017/12/06/tim-graham-show-daniel-briere-still-cant-believe-sabres-didnt-lock-up-him-chris-drury-and-4-first-round-picks/?utm_campaign=puma&utm_medium=social&utm_source=Twitter#link_time=1512666914 Edited December 7, 2017 by Jokertecken

CallawaySabres
The offer sheet came after they were let go so none of this really matters......
MattPie
Wasn't the offer sheet not signed until AFTER Drury and Briere left? Yep. I guess Danny is under the mistaken assumption that there was forethought about the entire situation. It was a purely panic move and I'm sure doing it again, they'd have signed one of them, and perhaps if the offer sheet still came, take the firsts and run. It was a purely panic move and I'm sure doing it again, they'd have signed one of them, and perhaps if the offer sheet still came, take the firsts and run. Briere told us that if the Sabres simply had dropped their purported policy of not negotiating contracts in-season (they secretly hammered out a deal with Drury but didn't consummate it) and then declined to match the Edmonton Oilers' offer sheet to Thomas Vanek, Drury and Briere would have been back for less money than they spent on Vanek "I really assumed they would come to us together and offer us a package deal or something like that," Briere said. "But they didn't talk to Chris, I think, until two weeks until free agency, and they didn't talk to me until the last week before free agency. "So at that point we said, 'Look, we're so close [to free agency beginning], we're going to check it out and see what's out there for us and see what happens.' MattPie
Danny may be playing a little lose with the times. He was signed with Philly on 7/1 (https://www.nhl.com/flyers/news/flyers-sign-center-daniel-briere-to-multiple-year-contract/c-435821) Vanek signed the offer sheet on 7/6 (https://www.hockeyfeed.com/nhl-news/on-this-day-oilers-make-50-million-offer-sheet-for-vanek). SabresBillsFan
I thought Chris only wanted to stay if Danny was coming back. That whole offseason was a show. All 3 should have been signed a lot sooner.

I mean the point is, if the Sabres would have negotiated in the middle of the year for Drury and Briere, we would have signed them for cheaper, and then could have let Edmonton take Vanek. Right, I think that's what Danny is trying to say. That it would have been smarter to lock he and Drury down during the season and then the Vanek decision would have made itself and the Sabres would have gotten Drury, Briere, and the 4 firsts, instead of just Vanek. They wouldn't have had the option of matching the offer sheet which would have gotten them out of being handcuffed to Vanek.
North Buffalo
Darcy sure screwed that one but still think Drury was gone all along to the rangers... he want to go home. just like shattenkirk this year.

nfreeman
There have been plenty of low points in the history of Buffalo sports mismanagement. That was the all-time worst IMHO.
inkman
It's super cool how even the players are discussing this a dozen years later. We get it. They up. Could you imagine that team? Jesus, that's such a dream scenario Buuuuuutttt does Edmonton do the offer sheet under those circumstances? They probably could have offered less and still had the Sabres cap strapped with 48 & 23 on the payroll.

Edmonton also could have offered the same, and assumed we'd shed cap elsewhere I do agree it's annoying that it keeps being brought up. I was hesitant to start this thread because we've discussed this adnaseum, but eh why not Edited December 7, 2017 by Jokertecken

I was hesitant to start this thread because we've discussed this adnaseum, but eh why not I think it's good to get the player's perspective. Danny was a leader on that team and you have to think there might have been some resentment, both on the part of Drury and Briere, as well as the other players that were left with just Vanek after all they'd been through. Sabres Fan in NS
All I have to say on this matter, since it happened over 10 years ago, is thanks for adding the second 'e' to his name in the thread title. I think Briere is on a book release tour and is trying to hype it as much as possible.

It's like if we found out the McDavid lottery was rigged I just picture someone like Goose reading Briere's comments now and suddenly remembering how pissed he was that summer. I betcha he was mad that we ended up with Vanek instead of D and B. I bet a lot of guys on that team were mad.
pastajoe
They thought they had to sign their rising star Vanek after letting those two go, or else the fans would have gone nuts over letting everyone go.

IMO, the season ticket holders would've been fine knowing we had 4 number 1 picks, despite where the Oilers finished in the standings. Turns out we lost Hall and Nugent-Hopkins.
