Stoner Posted November 25, 2017 Report Posted November 25, 2017 Everything we hold dear and believe in to our core in one YouTube video. Thought the youngens might like to hear Ted. Actually, I don't remember him being that wired up very often, then again it was a deciding Game 5 against the terrifying Quebec Nordiques. I know it's a tape of a game from 1985, but maybe this is a cautionary tale about going back to the royal blue, at least that shade. It never looked great on TV. A Craig Ramsay blunder, Le Petit Tigre and bad, bad goaltending. Enjoy. Quote
Jacque Richard Posted November 25, 2017 Report Posted November 25, 2017 I like ted, it’s too bad that he isn’t here. I remember him with pat Hannigan as well Quote

Eleven Posted November 25, 2017 Report Posted November 25, 2017 I prefer the dark blue (and I would LOVE some ND style metallic gold), but this might not be the lowlight reel to convince everyone. This was two years into the Sabres playoff drought. (Different than the Bills one. The Sabres didn't win a series for ten years.) But damn, I love these memories and Ted! Quote
woods-racer Posted November 25, 2017 Report Posted November 25, 2017 Exciting hockey... Goalie uniforms, that by them selves don't fill 3/4 of the net.... Defensemen scoring... Those where the days! Quote

Neo Posted November 25, 2017 Report Posted November 25, 2017 (edited) Life’s beautiful. I recall that game. I was 23 years old and a grad student at Rutgers University, Newark. Night school, for me. I worked days. I sat in the back of a large lecture hall. We were studying Federal Home Loan Banks and their role as financial intermediaries. Back in the day, we had no cell phones. We had no interwebs. Every 15 minutes, or so, I’d leave my seat in the back of the hall and walk up the aisle. I opened the large back doors as quietly as I could. In the back hallway, there was a payphone. I’d dial a 900 number (remember those?) and listen to frequently updated recordings of “around the league” NHL updates. I’d hear 30 to 60 seconds about each game from a wonderfully breathless and excited announcer. What tension, waiting for the Sabres score. I used an AT&T Calling Card (remember those?). There was no need for a pocket full of coins. I marveled at the technology. “Any score, any game, any time.” I can’t remember what I had for lunch, yesterday. Ah, life ... I hated Quebec! woods-racer Posted November 25, 2017 Report Posted November 25, 2017 Well, at least you remembered that you ate lunch yesterday :w00t: Never knew 900 numbers where for anything else but ladies with lovely voices giving great advice about ones anatomy, and how to best use it. Quote

I remember abusing the hell out of my free (school) Westlaw account to read Sabres articles. The Internet was very, very new then. It wasn't useful to follow hockey unless you wanted to read Usenet, and even that didn't give you real articles, just shittier versions of message boards. Quote

Three goals in the final 11 minutes to win the deciding game 5, at home. End to end, skill players, rough stuff and drama. The goalies were so much fun and had so much style. We're never going back to the days of the standup goalie whose physique reminded you of your insurance agent. Mores the pity. Alas, scoring is up 12 percent this year and it's the highest scoring season to this point in the season since 05-06. If the dead puck era is dying, good riddance. BTW Gil Perreault at 34 was more than a point a game player in the regular season and playoffs that year. How many points would that Bert have if placed in today's game? Quote

It’s occured to me. I’d pencil Gil in for a 30G / 40A year IF he had wingers. Teams work, or grind, to goals today. Gil flew to them. Quote
