rakish Posted October 30, 2017 Author Report Posted October 30, 2017 Reinhart Okposo Girgensons I really thought given a fresh start under a new coach these three would be productive, especially with their minutes and strength of opposition. Just not happening. It's very disappointing. I felt like commenting on an article in canucks army regarding Ben Hutton, so I walked through Vancouver's season so far. The coach's plan was to get the Sedins, Vanek, Hutton and Stetcher against the opponent's weakest players. They lost a few games, and Vancouver changed tactics, now Hutton plays top pair with Tanev, and won a few games. Buffalo seemed to approach the season with the same strategy, but with Reinhart in the Sedin's role, and it hasn't worked for the Sabres either. I never ended up commenting on the Hutton article. woods-racer Posted October 30, 2017 Report Posted October 30, 2017 I mean, zemgus was when Housley wisely put him with Eichel. Okposo was productive last year. He's coming back from a neurological issue, we should probably give him time. I can give Housley and the team time. What I can't give is the excuse that these players need more time given their strength of opposition. If they are as good as we hope they are they should be dominating no matter what part of the season they are in. It's not coaching or a system that has our coach and opposing coaches matching the least skilled players against them and them not generating offense. The eye test has some numbers with it and it's matching what we are seeing, that some of our best players have not been doing well, and it's not because they have been facing stiff opposition. Quote

3putt Posted November 3, 2017 Report Posted November 3, 2017 The only thing I glean from this data is on average, Eichel is drawing the oppositions best scorers more often tban not. Is this remotely accurate? Quote
rakish Posted November 4, 2017 Author Report Posted November 4, 2017 It is remotely accurate that Eichel faces the other teams best scorers, but for me there's more to glean from this data. Just looking at the Arizona game, to me it looks like a home game, which means to me that Tochett doesn't care about matching lines. Getting, likely, their best defensive forward (Larsson) against Arizona's best scorers is an option Tochett can avoid, but doesn't. Last year I didn't walk through every game, but the compilation states that Bylsma was trying to get O'Reilly against the best scores, and the fourth line against the other teams fourth line, with Eichel and Reinhart against 2nd lines. This year the strategy is all different, it's often trying to get Eichel and Kane against the other teams best line, and have Reinhart and Griffith beat the fourth line. The defense has also been interesting to me. There have been games that the opposition tries to take advantage of Buffalo's 3rd pair (like WR notes after the Boston game) and then there are games that the opposition doesn't care (again the Arizona game). rakish Posted November 5, 2017 Author Report Posted November 5, 2017 I thought Dallas would match lines, but this could have been a home game for the Sabres. If it's been a while and you don't remember this one, Dallas scored 4 quickly, it ended up 5-1, or something like that, in Dallas. woods-racer Posted November 8, 2017 Report Posted November 8, 2017 He was being match up against Ove and did a real nice job. Eye test and your numbers are seeing it the same way. The Reinhart line is still facing the opposing teams *weakest* line, but seems to be playing much better. Quote
rakish Posted November 11, 2017 Author Report Posted November 11, 2017 Last night was Florida 4-1 with a couple of empty net goals. Home game. For me these numbers are similar to what the last coach was doing, O'Reilly gets the tough minutes, the 4th line gets the 4th line, and Scandella in the role of the injured Risto. The major difference from last year was that last year they would have Larsson getting tough minutes. Early this season, it seemed to me that Housley's intent was to get Reinhart choice playing time, but that didn't work. Lately he had the Eichel/Kane line against the other teams top line, this game for me is something new, and something old.
