North Buffalo Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 Linus with a Johnson backup... Quote
Doohicksie Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 Yes. I'm sure Housley will switch them up enough to figure out who gives us the best chance of winning. I doubt we'll see much of Ullmark, barring an injury to Robin or The Big Johnson. Quote

Doohicksie Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 Lehner has not been good impo The whole team hasn't been good. I expect that, just as the rest of the team has been (mostly) given a chance to play out of their funk, so will the #1 goalie. Wait 4 years for Ukko Pekko-Lukkakekakinenn to arrive Gesundheit! Quote
darksabre Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 I've said before that I think the players prefer Johnson, and I'm sticking to it. Quote

Eleven Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 Can I pull a Monty Brewster and campaign for "none of the above"? Quote

Pokey Jones Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 Another Murray mistake........but we are stuck with him for now. Johnson has never shown himself to be a solid every night goaltender. Goaltending is a definite weakness. Quote

nfreeman Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 Both Lehner and CJ might be closer to Marty Biron "really good backup" ceilings than "true #1 guy" status. I wasn't terribly impressed with Ullmark a couple of years ago, but maybe. In the meantime, CJ should start tomorrow night and, if the Sabres win, he should start again on Friday. Lehner just hasn't earned the automatic reclaim of the #1 slot. Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 (edited) Johnson is a good backup + goalie who can play 30 plus games a year and give you good but not stellar goaltending. He isn’t better then Lehner, just calmer in net. While I do think that Lehner has the ability to be a consistent starter in the NHL, Ullmark is the future as soon as next year unless Lehner becomes a brick wall as the season progresses. This is the one part of the Jbot plan I think I have a handle on. Moving to Ullmark next year and on from Lehner saves over $3 mill for next season, even if we retain Johnson for stability. Lehner will remain No. 1 for now and hopefully he’ll bring back at least a 2nd rd pick at the deadline. It’s unlikely someone will give up a 1st for him. ???? MattPie Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 I want Lehner to succeed, but realistically he's looked terrible this year. Not, "well, the team isn't playing well in front of him" terrible, little things like being on one post while the puck flies by the other post, and awkwardly making the first save and leaving the net open. He's really fighting it. Quote
dudacek Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 (edited) Phil should start Chad tomorrow. Team needs his calmness right now more than Lehner's fire. But anyone thinking he should permanently supplant Robin as the starter hasn't paid enough attention to Chad's flaws. He can't give you 60 solid starts a season. He's calm and positionally sound but one puck will leak through him virtually every game and he is neither big, strong, nor physically gifted. Lehner is all those things Johnson is not, and when the game is going according to form, he's pretty imposing in there. But he is also prone to overplaying and getting inside his own head. And his teammates have to feel that. It's been a long time since the Sabres have been in a position where the goalie really matters. When they are, I'm certain Johnson is not the guy to get them where we want to go. Lehner could be, but I haven't seen it yet and I am skeptical I ever will. I have hope for Ullmark, who has been properly incubating on the farm, but at last viewing he wasn't ready. In the meantime, Lehner is somewhere between the 15 and 30 best starter in the league and Johnson between 30 and 40. If Phil uses them right, they are good enough to get us to the playoffs, but no further. My opinion on this hasn't changed in a year and a half. Edited October 16, 2017 by dudacek Quote
shrader Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 So this whole discussion comes up as a result of a single win? Neither goalie has done anything to distinguish himself from the other. Lehner's played an extra 100 minutes and has slightly better numbers, but Johnson has that magic number in the win column. I've got a word that describes this situation much better than controversy does. That word is "blah". Right now there's a whole lot of nothing from the position. Quote

I have it on good authority that Casey Mittelstadt will play goalie as well as 1st line center simultaneously as soon as he graces us with his presence. He'll score 10 goals a game while also getting 98 shutouts on the way to the first ever perfect season. Quote
