SDS Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 Can someone point out the coach that has come out and said they want to play slow? That they want to be a team of plodders? Just like NFL defensive coordinators... When was the last time someone said that wanted a defense that retreated instead of attacked? Quote
dudacek Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 Maybe not in those words, but we've all heard "We have to slow them down" "Grind it out" "Protect the net" "We don't want to turn this into a track meet" "We can't afford to trade chances." Rob Ray says stuff like that almost every broadcast. Quote
Trettioåtta Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 Maybe play a controlled game rather than a fast one? Quote

Rob Ray says stuff like that almost every broadcast. And he was right. We had a slow team, a grinder coach, and defensive play style. With a few really talented pieces that didn't fit. Quote

And damn, they were fast last night. Quote
darksabre Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 I don't really get this thread, but I know what I saw last night looked like a team that was playing faster than they did in the past. So I guess I'll take our coach at his word. Quote

Was it just lip service? Quote
Taro T Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 Motivation: Last night was a fast team. I'm pretty darn sure Murray said he wanted a fast team too, but didn't deliver. Did he not know what fast was? Was it just lip service? Pretty sure he wanted big & quick, following the LA Kings model. But with the style the coach he wouldn't punt had them play, the speed that was on the team wasn't realized as guys that WEREN'T quick were given prominent roles and exposed as not being able to execute the (IMHO flawed) game plan. Botterill seems to be willing to sacrifice some size to give Housley the speed team that he wants to attack with. Somebody in the game day tgread said Moe-ray-all is slow. That, flat out, isn't true. They always have a speedy team. One of the Habs (Pacioretti maybe?) had said the Sabres speed took them by surprise & the Sabres played the way Moe-ray-all had wanted to do. That is a nice complement to recieve. (The player was quoted during the WGR post-game show.) Quote

Taro T Posted October 6, 2017 Report Posted October 6, 2017 Plecanec said that I think. Goofing it alliteratively. Is that LT or ST memory oops? Used to know which it was, but forgot. Quote
Pokey Jones Posted October 7, 2017 Report Posted October 7, 2017 You win with speed now. The D has to be mobile and transition quickly, this is already showing signs of improvement. The forwards need to stretch pass more and jump the gaps quicker. Our puck possession still sucks and we chase far too much in the defensive zone. Quote
