It's going to be more exciting that's for certain.

No more dump and chase.

I'll be watching the forwards tonight to see if one hangs back when the D rushes up ice.

Happened several times.

I liked Eichel last night. Far from the tightness others mentioned, I thought his game seemed more mature.

Also, we didn't funnel to him as much as we did last year. There were more rushes where he was support instead of the carrier than I ever remember seeing, between defensemen choosing to go and Kane enjoying the puck too. Not to say that that's a bad thing, but I think that's why he looked less visible to some. I thought he made plenty of good plays and could have had 3 points against not-Price.

I don't think they have enough players who can play Housley's system (yet).

Hmm maybe. I also think it's gonna take a month for everyone's legs to adapt to his system

I don't know much about the very technical parts of the NHL game...like football, I can say if a good game was played or not but I do not have any idea the responsibilities of each player are at any given moment.  But, I do think that if everyone is saying the new 'system' is totally different, that it will take some time to get the players used to it.

What I am starting to watch closely is the performance of Ryan O'Rielly.  Last year I thought he didn't have a good year (a decent year but certainly not getting $ worth for $7.5 million)  Whether Bylsma's system was good for him or not I'm not sure, but seeing how he made a lot of mistakes last year, I was hoping a DIFFERENT system would be good for him.  Through the limited action I have seen in the preseason and 2 games of the regular season, I am a little more worried.

I'm not saying he is a bad player...he is above average, but not more than that.  When he had bad stretches...it was said to maybe be linemates...or the overall talent of the team...or the coaching...the system........but other than very brief stretches in his time here, I'm seeing an average at best 2nd or 3rd line center.  I need more from him.

I've noticed a lot of people bringing up O'Reilly's contract over the first two games. I get that he's been bad but he is not overpaid. Bylsma gave him so much ice time he was done by february last year.

He's a legit 2 way first liner who's great on the dot. He plays a heavy game and is a possession driver. He's the second best forward on our team.

He'll bounce back (whether it be injury or a funk)

ROR is at his best when his feet are moving and he's picking people's pockets. I haven't seen that consistently from him the first two games. That could be due to Housley's system or he could be starting to slow down. I hope not the later. It feels as though he's not playing at 100%. We may never know.

I have been somewhat critical of ROR since last year...and the 2 games this year...while only 2 games..have only reinforced that view.

Your point about last year him wearing down..that is a good point.  If he had 2-3 minutes of less ice time per game I think it would have helped him greatly.

I want him to be better.  When he ended up playing for team Canada last year in the World cup he looked great..one of the top performers on that team.  I just want to see him be a legit top 100 player in the NHL this year.

My only other thought (and this is going back to the new system), maybe the game is changing more than we even think?  The game might be moving to needing speedy forwards as almost mandatory.  Basically, if you aren't a fast skater...you might as well be really slow?  We'll see how the season progresses.

On top of that, all the new players. It's just going to take time for more chemistry to develop. So many of these guys haven't played with each other.

All I want from ROR is to be a shutdown guy. If he scores great, but first responsibility/role should be keeping their best center off the score sheet. Let Jack and Samson lead the O.

As I said about DD and his system, no system works without the right players.  10 player turnover and a "emphasis" on speed.  Moulson and Gorges are where they belong, in the pressbox, but the team lacks any real finish.

I still don't think we have the horse to run Housley's system.  It may be 20-30 game before we know that for sure, but the omens are already showing.

I agree with this. The good part of the league is trying to play a faster system. Players all over the league have leaned up going into this season in anticipation of that. We have a real problem when we face fast teams. Last year was no different. We are still carrying guys that can't or won't fit into that system that Phil wants. It'll take a while to sort it all out. Also some of these guys can't score to save their lives. And unless Lehner turns his game on its head and figures it out this will be a long year.

Here is the sad thing, TM was drafting with DD's system in mind and DR was drafting with no system in mind.  So hopefully some of the draftee are suitable for the new system or this rebuild will make Edmonton's look short.

I was driving and listening to GR55 and they were talking about Max Paciorietty's quote from the post game where he was praising the Sabres speed, saying the team was so improved and how they dominated at times. I can't find the quote, but it does seem we have added speed. The chemistry just has to come together, IMO
