GoPre Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 A bit late to ask this question.... any of you watching the eclipse today? Where I'm at roughy 86% of the sun will be covered. Wish I had traveled to an area that will get to experience a total eclipse, but I am still very excited. Have a pair of safe solar glasses ready to go! Quote
josie Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 I'll be driving to Rochester during it. Genuinely a bit worried about if it's really that safe to be driving during it. Don't have a choice. Quote

Doohicksie Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 I walked out with a piece of paper with a hole punched in it. When I held it above the ground as high as I could, I could pretty clearly see the crescent shape. I'd take a pic but they discourage pictures where I work. But the effect is something like the spots of light filtering through a tree like in this pic I found on the net: Quote
bob_sauve28 Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 I'm near Nashville. Using three pairs of sunglasses and a piece of dark plastic from a garbage bag. I'm so ghetto! Quote
pi2000 Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 had 4 pairs of sunglasses got a very clear view here in southern Cal (65%). it wasn't dark, but strange lighting seemed like the sun was at half power Quote
Eleven Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 So far, I haven't noticed any kind of change here in Buffalo. Seems as bright as it was at noon. Quote
darksabre Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 Stepped outside when I noticed the leaf shadows changing shape. Some guys in the other office building had some glasses and were happy to pass them around. Eventually my whole office noticed I was outside having a look and came out. Pretty cool stuff. Quote
Taro T Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 Used a welder's mask w/ a 2nd glass in it to look for a couple of seconds.. Would say it was ~85% here and it was dusky w/ the light levels. Quote
shrader Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 It was pretty uneventful here. I'm only a couple hours away from the peak spots in SC, but it didn't get much darker than normal here. It just goes to show you how much of that sun you need to block out in order for it to get dark outside. I think I heard a number around 85% for what we would get here. Quote
cgang Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 Apparently Buffalo and Rochester will be directly in the middle of the 100% total eclipse path on April 8, 2024. https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/april-8-2024/ [there is a Buffalo sports joke in here somewhere...] Quote

Buffalo is pretty much smack-dab in the middle. Quote
3putt Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 That should be the next SS meetup. Playoffs eclipse perfect. Quote

Tondas Posted August 22, 2017 Report Posted August 22, 2017 Lincoln, NE. Total coverage. Stared right at it for 1 minute and 30 seconds with no eye protection. More impressive than I thought it would be. Only good thing ever about living in Nebraska. Quote
Weave Posted August 22, 2017 Report Posted August 22, 2017 He'll be blind by tomorrow night.... Quote

Randall Flagg Posted August 22, 2017 Report Posted August 22, 2017 Lincoln, NE. Total coverage. Stared right at it for 1 minute and 30 seconds with no eye protection. More impressive than I thought it would be. Only good thing ever about living in Nebraska. That's a terrible idea. UV radiation was still hitting your eyes, and that does damage without you even knowing that it's happening because it's not in the visible spectrum and so not "bright". Quote
