Plenty of former HCs become assistants.  Not just in hockey, either.  Think Don Zimmer or Wade Phillips or Dave Tippett.

I thought Lindy was known was the exact opposite of this. Overloading his starter, ignoring his backup causing fatigue for the starter as rustiness for The backup.
