Around the NHL 2017

Thomas Vanek just scored the most Thomas Vanek goal that Thomas Vanek has ever scored...

I'm not crying, you're crying...

Terry did want to make him the highest player in the league before Darcy traded him. Terry then fired Darcy and hired Patty after bumping into him at Applebees. Patty didn't want to tank and he left too, but not before hiring GMTM. Yeah, that all made sense. Just who was making the big decisions? Who decided to tank?

December 26th is Boxing Day in Canada. A holiday, but not a stat holiday. So, most have it off with pay, but not everyone. Pretty much the whole country is shut down from 5:00 PM on the 24th until the morning of the 27th. If you guys want to invade, there is your opportunity.

boxing day is a stat holiday, maybe not in NS but in most of the rest of the country it is. They had recently (maybe the last 10 years) allowed retail stores to open if they want those days to join restaurants but it's still a paid holiday

Today is the 100th anniversary. The start time was to acknowledge that.

yup, 100 years ago the NHL played it's very first game on December 17th 1917 with the Canadians vs Ottawa, so yes it is technicslly a Canadian holiday.

In honor of this anniversary the NHL decided to have Toronto (of course) play the Hurricanes during the day and allow schools and kids to attend the game. Nothing says 100 years of NHL hockey like watching a team from Carolina play.....

Getting that way in the States because everyone calls out sick. PS The Carolinas should not be anywhere near the great sport of Hockey. Screw the south, we kicked their butt once, can do it again. Edited by Kottbullar

Boxing Day is not a stat holiday in NS.

When the retail giants won wide-open Sunday shopping about 10, or so, years ago ... it actually was a tough fight to get it ... they decided to scale back on the opening of non-stat holidays.

So, most retail is closed on the 26th in NS now.

I've seen 'stat' thrown around in regards to Canadian holidays. What's the etymology of "stat" in this context? Static Holiday (as in the same day each year)?

Statutory, as in by law.  The feds and each province determine statutory holidays.  This means that if you work you are entitled to time off in-lieu, or pay at double time, or whatever, as outlined in provincial law.

NS has the fewest stat holidays of any province, I believe.

New Years Day

Heritage Day (February)

Good Friday

Canada Day

Labour Day

Christmas Day

Remembrance Day (November 11th) is a sort of stat holiday, but is governed by it's own law ... The Remembrance Day Act.

Here in ON it is a stat holiday, but IIRC most retail is permitted to now be open, but that only happened recently. Everything else is closed.

that sucks, ON has "family day" in February instead along with Victoria day in May, and Thanksgiving in October. Remembrance day is typically only a government/bank holiday, along with Easter Monday here. Working in government, we work the day but get 2 lieu days instead to take when we want. Also theres civic holiday in August thats the same as Remembrance day and Easter Monday, but we get it off.

In NS many people have Victoria Day, and Thanksgiving off work too and for many it is a paid day, but they are not stat days, so there are also many that have to work and don't get time in lieu, or double time.

And there you have my run on sentence for the day.

I'm sure people will be staying home anyways, seeing as how it's going to be minus fifty bajillion next week.

But it's not summer in Winterpeg....

They have to give us more stat days to want to stay and live in ON with Wynne in charge. You may not have all the vacation of everyone else, but at least you get to enjoy maritime living in NS
