Stoner Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 It seems to me that the first rule of developing a marketing slogan is to make sure your customers can't take it as a joke and throw it back in your face. After 9-11, for example, United Airlines wouldn't have tried to woo nervous fliers back with the slogan: "United: putting the excitement back in flying." So you've got to wonder about the slogan the Sabres are using in their advertising: "The future starts now." The subtitle is "The Buffalo Sabres are back and laying it all on the line." It invites an immediate joke, especially since the front office has made few moves (positive ones, anyway), explaining to fans lamely that next offseason will present a better chance to sign free agents and improve the team. "The future: Wait til next year" would have made more sense. Laying it on the line? OK, whatever. Point 2 on this organization's woeful marketing scheme. They've started one of those "business to business" groups that try to get businesses to buy season tickets. Shouldn't the real fans, not people looking for a tax writeoff, be the first place to go to try and rebuild your sagging attendance? Didn't we have enough "papering of the house" under John Rigas, with listless, lifeless, bored out of their skulls "fans" sitting there pointing at the scoreboard when the camera swung around to their end? Bring back the real fans! Maybe the Sabres are trying to take a page out of the Bills playbook, but they have a long way to go -- after all, the Bills, a team that hasn't made the playoffs in five years, fill their stadium week after week. Their slogan: "Be there." Sounds good to me.
deluca67 Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 How about this for a slogan? "Sabres Hockey....We don't care if you buy tickets because we make more collecting Revenue Sharing." A little wordy for a billboard?
Taro T Posted September 5, 2005 Report Posted September 5, 2005 Hey, "the future starts now" (which I agree is a bad slogan) isn't any worse than "Celebrate the Tradition" when the team was entering the 7th year of a 10 year streak of not making it past the 1st round. Dave.
Strow Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 I saw this one outside the philly arena, "Back where we belong"
Rabbit151 Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 The Flyers slogan should be, "Over-Paid, Under-Achieve" Maybe the Sabres should bring back the "Hardest Working Team" slogan. That's another nice way of saying "We're Garbage, but we'll try hard".
IKnowPhysics Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 Maybe the Sabres should bring back the "Hardest Working Team" slogan. Agreed. Work ethic seems to be the theme so far this year. "Buffalo Sabres: Stanley Cup Champions 2083-2086." "The only team that Rick Jeanerette calls for." "Things get interesting April 3rd-5th." "The Underdogs Always Win." "Free Bandits Tickets."
Taro T Posted September 7, 2005 Report Posted September 7, 2005 "Free Bandits Tickets." My personal favorite. Although "Free Beer" would probably pack them in better. Heck, I might even buy an extra ticket! Dave.
Saber61 Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 LOL thats awsome... 'free bandits tickets'
Swedesessed Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 "Free Bandits Tickets."
buckeyemike Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 "Free Bandits Tickets." It's sad when your hockey team has to give props to the city's more successful indoor lacrosse team. Mike
inkman Posted October 1, 2005 Report Posted October 1, 2005 I apoligize to Clint Malarchuck in advance, but you can't forget the proverbial "Hey, someone might get their throat slit". Where's the devil smiley when I need it. :o
Guest B Papa in C-town Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 "Top Shelf! Where Darcy hides the forwards!" Could be worse Buffalo: The Bisons: The future is now! Starring Ben Broussard and Casey Blake!! The Bills: J.P. Losman: Can't even complete his name!!
