Van Morrison is a pompous ass.

If you've haven't seen the Bands ' Last Waltz ' have a go its great but anyways I digress, within that concert footage Van the man himself performs and he does all of these kung foo type kicks a la Elvis as he's performing. During the performance the camera pans to Robbie Robertson and the bass player and they're both splitting a gut.

My son did a paper in grade school on Stevie Ray Vaughn.  He was scolded by the teacher for choosing a person with such a drugged up past.

Damned devil music!

About a year before he died saw JB & SRV play in the hockey rink the Aeros used to play in. The encore had both bands jamming together & my buddies & I had worked our way to about the 12th row by then. Good times. B-)

I'm sad I went back to work and missed this thread.

Never seen so much gospel truth and utter blasphemy collected in one spot in such a short length of time.

Flagg, any doubt you are my favourite poster has been erased forever.

That feeling is reciprocated

Well, you're tied with PA.

I am not going to argue for or against. I think when musicians get to a certain level their choice of style ordains their art. I like Garcia, Page Dave Davies and Knopfler as much for their style as their pure skill. I also think Noel Gallagher and Jack White keep a lot of the spirit of those guys alive. Am cranking the Winwood Clapton Madison Square Garden cd as we speak. What a show.

Jack White.  Another guy keeping the spirit of Jimi alive.

Two words ...

Duane Allman

I could see consensus here.

Btw, if you haven't seen the movie "It Might get Loud" give it a try. Very interesting. Jack White, Jimmy Page and the Edge.

Who's Next!

"Jim Morrison, the guys a drunken buffoon masquerading as a poet! Give me The Guess Who. They have the courage to be drunken buffoons! And that makes them poetic!"

The Who not the guess who...

PS In the Best guitarist categorie you are forgetting Stevie Ray Vaughn....

Another Jimmy protege...

I have just a handful of reliable rage-triggers in this life. Beatles were a boy band is one.

Holy sh1t dude. Stahp.

There are good arguments to be made that Harrison managed to surpass anything the band did.

I like this thinking.

The Beatles admittedly started off trite -- but listen to early Stones, Kinks, Zombies, Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, and Who albums -- they all did. They were all covering 1950s rock sounds and just slowly expanding them and being a bit more brash. But following an album-to-album across all the major artists in a progression through the '60s... it's the Beatles leading the way. Working with 4-tracks and then 8-tracks through the bulk of their career, and always being among the first to record on a "pop" album (and not have it sound like crap, which is an amazing bonus) all the things they did: writing all their own songs, not having a lead singer (even Ringo wrote and sang), purposeful feedback, sitars and tabla, ADR, backwards vocals and guitar solos, French horns playing beyond their range, tape loops, infinite loops at the end of records, shrieking Yokos... and still having catchy hooks... Seriously, full props to the Beatles. They also pissed off more people than any of those other bands combined.

While I'm at it... Dave Matthews Band was good. Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash, and Before These Crowded Streets are all underrated albums. So says the person who's never been to a live Dave Matthews Band show and doesn't have to deal with any of the fans who give the band a bad rep.

Pink Floyd went too soft too quickly, I think. Otherwise, they've got a really nice sound.

And Jimi - Band of Gypsies - still lovely after all these years.

Dont forget the pancakes

Game. Blouses.

Saw it.  Very enjoyable.

BTW, am I the only one that keeps reading the thread title as The Band Camp Thread?

I listened to Tommy in it's entirety for the first time this week (youtube is amazing, even if I feel a little dirty about it). That is an incredible album for 1969. I cannot imagine listening to it at the time; almost nothing like that album at that point. I'm not sure I'd listen to it all the time, but holy moly.

Youtube was on point earlier: Chemical Brothers "Dig your own hole" album into Massive Attack "Mezzanine"; it's like they had a record of what was in the 10-disc changer in the trunk of my car in 1998. It didn't go to KMFDM next, so I guess youtube isn't a total creeper.

I grew up listening to/watching Tommy. I love it. I know it's a little hokey in some spots, but I love it so much. Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, the Who at some of their best... A favorite.

Mezzanine is a great cd/album/record/tape. (Not sure what you're supposed to use now-a-days.

You're goddamned right it is.

I chase Massive Attack with some Portishead or Squarepusher. Mmmhm.

Tommy, Who's Next, or Quadrophenia?

My favorite Who album is actually Live at Leeds. Them giggling through a rendition of A Quick One While He's Away is just so so good.

Who's Next is great (even if many of those songs have been overplayed to where I have had to avoid them for awhile), Tommy's great, Quadrophenia wasn't my absolute fav but I still enjoy it.

The Who and The Doors were my favorite bands for yeeaaarrrsss.

Well, this clinches it. Josie is the single coolest person on here and I am insanely jealous of people who get to enjoy her presence in actual non-internet life.

d'aww

That's high praise for a milquetoast like me

What is everyone's guilty pleasure group? I <3 Coldplay. Haha.

... and now I'll undo it...

I listen to just about everything now. Before i got into classic rock and eventually metal, Coldplay was a love of mine (middle school). First concert I ever saw. I still listen to Rush of Blood to The Head or X&Y for nostalgia's sake. I don't get the virulent hatred people have for Coldplay. Sure, Chris Martin married a weirdo animated piece of beige who steams her vagoo and whatnot, but they've always been what they are.

There's a few guilty pleasure playlists on my spotify. They include such embarrassments like Carly Rae Jepsen because good lord, sometimes you just need to OD on sugar. Lady Gaga brings back some good party memories.

Sue me. I ain't too proud to admit it.

Oh, band stuff, right.  My girlfriend/wife used to drag me to DMB shows.  Last show we went to I very nearly got into a fight with some children who clearly didn't understand how to attend a show with festival seating, attend a concert in general, handle the intended vibe of a DMB show, or generally not suck at life.  If you fight at a DMB show you're doing it wrong.  Then later on I got peed on by a very high, very dirty, person, which oddly, was somehow more appropriate for the venue than the militant Jersey bro-squad I'd encountered earlier in the evening.  I decided I'd outgrown whatever tolerance I had for that band at that point.

Saw White Zombie at the Omni in 1996.  That was a fun show, my buddy and I were seated in the middle of a very large group of Hell's Angels.  Interesting evening on many levels.

:w00t:  Nicely done.

And I am jealous of your White Zombie experience.

Every time I get a chance to see Rob Zombie or Slayer or something, murphy's law kicks in.

I had tickets with my then bf to see Slayer and Megadeth. We were so stoked. And then Araya slipped a disc in his neck from headbanging too hard and they rescheduled/cancelled. Boo.

d4rk and I had tickets to see Rob Zombie. And then our very good friend planned his wedding on that exact day. There was no way to make both, and it ended up being tied for best wedding I've been to (sabill's was the other #1).

I am embarrassed to say I listen to the GO Go's... had a big crush on Belinda Carlisle in college, and the Bangles...

also used to "zone out" listening to White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane... The Soft Parade by the Doors and anything from Pat Benatar with that snarly face in the first MTV videos....in High School 30 years ago.

Forgot about DEVO and the Punk movement mostly eye candy stuff but Adam Ant was hysterical on MTV.
