Successful coaching is easily 85% solid man management.  Knowing how to handle each of your individual players in such a way that you get the absolute utmost out of them.  It's very hard to do, particularly at the pro level.  I consider tactics to be part of man management, can you get your players into positions to be successful or are you forcing square pegs into round holes for the sake of doing it "your way"?  Can you correctly define roles for each of your players, get them to buy into that role and then cultivate a relationship with that player where they are then willing to sacrifice for you and for the team in order to fulfill that role for you on a nightly basis. You find a guy that can do this well you've got a perennial contender, regardless of the moving pieces.

And it was Disco Dan's greatest weakness.

No, we don't. Again, I just found it odd that off the top of his head, our 21 year old ideal center wasn't listed when talking about centers other teams in the league crave.

You're reaching on this one.

ROR is a world-class two-way centre and Eichel is among the top young talents in hockey.

Sam is not in the same tier.

he didn't mention Kane either, should I read into it? O'Reilly and Eichel are at worlds and maybe Botterill just read about that. Let's just see where it goes is all I'm saying

He was talking about centers, no?

Hybrid center/wing.  Not a true full time center.  Very much like Sharp's role with Chicago.

Fair point.

Up tempo, puck possession, north/south game

I like hearing this. Couldn't Byslma's system be classified as an up-tempo, north/south game though? Just throwing it out there

Good point, I can't really argue with that. You think the new GM of Edmonton would mention McDavid and Draisatl though? I do...

I don't know, you'd think Botterill would want to do some interviews for an important hire.  He couldn't really start doing any of that until today.  I really don't know who in Pittsburgh he values that way either, Guerin is just a name to throw out.

I think traditionally, if bulk moves are made like that by FO guys, they do it at once.

He's clearly focused on what the pro scouting staff has developing for the summer and will be judging them based on that.

It's the right first step. Amateur draft next. Coaching staff last.

He'll be a busy man.

Not by anyone trying to keep a straight face while saying it

Yeah but is it indicative of anything if he doesn't mention Nuge in that same thoguht?

I like the comparison, but RNH and Reinhart are at much different points in their careers, and I don't think it's ever been debated where RNH plays on the ice

Botterill told me off podium president of hockey was not discussed. Wants to build large cachet of Asst GM like #Pens have.#Sabres

:flirt:

BTW, Gionta was at the presser today, FWIW

Posted (edited)

WGR gets him at 2p.m. And promised to ask the questions that weren't asked at the presser.

Your thoughts on Sam, Robin and Evander would be three of mine.

Right after "will you trade pick 8 and if not, how are you going to fix the defence?

- Loves our centers and young d with big minutes

- Wants high tempo, puck possession game

Well that's a relief... good thing he doesn't want to trade Eichel and O'Reilly, or play a slow non-possession game.

That's what I figured. Essentially, Botterill is the Hockey VP and he'll have a handful of lieutenants.

Asked Botterill after main presser about his coach picks in WBS trying to pick his brain. Said Sullivan and Clark Donatelli different story

Not sure what this means

Thanks for this. 2pm when? Tomorrow?

I would love to hear the answers to those questions. As well as why he thinks Pittsburgh has been more successful in the last 2 years than they had over the previous 7 combined

He sounds competent, but it was all your standard boiler plate GM speak.... communication, development, structure... yadda yadda yadda...   Nothing he said was particularly enlightening or anything to get excited about IMO.

Nice, thanks

Good.  Gionta is the Captain of this team.  He should be there.

Yeah, it's most likely just this. I don't think it's any indication he's going to be resigned or anything. In fact, I expect him not to be

"Size can be overvalued if it doesn't compete hard"

"We didn't make the playoffs, we need to improve in all aspects of our game."

He indicated the blue line needs work and every team wants another good defensemen.

Sam first as a winger from what he's seen of him.

Where was that fire Jason Botterill thread?
