etiennep99 Posted April 25, 2017 Report Posted April 25, 2017 I think that Andreychuk, Mogilny, and Vanek stand the test of time. Martin, Gare, Perreault, they all played during the 70's and 80's when goalies were pipsqueaks of 5'8" tall and skinny. Those goalies played a stand-up style that made along the ice goals really easy to score. Today, you gotta lift the puck most of the time. Gare and Martin, from highlights, scored a lot of goals from the boards with big slapshots. That just doesn't happen like it used to.....And where would Perreault, Martin, Robert, Gare (Gretzky) rate in today's game? Perreault seemd to float a lot (and was a smoker). Gretzky is one player who thrived on small, stand-up goalies who played long enough to see larger (but not HUGE) butterfly goalies arrive. Would be interesting to analyze his goals over time. Quote
Marvelo Posted April 25, 2017 Report Posted April 25, 2017 Rick Martin. The others just didn't light the lamp nearly as often or consistently as Sabres although some went on to be great goal scorers with other teams...Mike Bossy instead of Ric Seiling would've been nice. A good read is Punch Imlach's "Heaven and Hell in the NHL. It gives much of the dirt on the Sabres and Leafs in the 70s and 80s. Quote
Doohicksie Posted April 25, 2017 Report Posted April 25, 2017 One more thing in Gare's favor: he frequently played on the 2nd line. He didn't have Gil feeding him. IIRC, he played on the checking line with Luce and Ramsey as line mates. Yeah, that always puzzled me. One of the best scorers on the team, on a line with two defensive players.. Quote
Taro T Posted April 25, 2017 Report Posted April 25, 2017 Yeah, that always puzzled me. One of the best scorers on the team, on a line with two defensive players.. Those 2 "defensive players" had 6 & 8 (respectively) 20+ goal seasons & 6 & 5 (respectively) 60 point seasons & several high 50 point seasons. Luce & Ramsay were both 196' ;) players & worked very well w/ Gare. Quote
TheAud Posted April 25, 2017 Report Posted April 25, 2017 I'd go: 1) Gare 2) Martin 3) Andreychuck 4) Mogilny 5) Vanek 6) Eichel. #6 is rising in the rankings however... Quote
MattPie Posted April 25, 2017 Report Posted April 25, 2017 I keep wanting to bring Audette into this conversation, but I don't really think he belongs. Quote
Eleven Posted April 25, 2017 Author Report Posted April 25, 2017 I keep wanting to bring Audette into this conversation, but I don't really think he belongs. So bring him in. What's your case for him? I'd like to build an eight-player bracket, so maybe I can include him. Quote
