I'm sure that's why Niskanen didn't argue when the penalty was changed to a misconduct.

Agreed and that's exactly what Olczyk said...bang-bang play. I'd be ok with a 2-minute crosscheck minor on Niskanen, but that's not even a major...much less a game misconduct.

The Connor McDavid goal where he stopped on a dime showed Wayne Gretzky at the game jumping up waving his arms when he saw the goal. What a coincidence that those two played on the same team.

Assault is a legal term, and legally he did not assault anyone. No intent also not known if there is an actual injury/ mark/ bruise on Crosby, also required for assault. Assault requires mens rea, not a strict liability crime (like manslaughter for example).

 

A penalty yes, game misconduct is a stretch. Assault no.

Play by Niskanen was NOT a dirty play. The only intention was him trying to protect himself. That could've been any player in the league and the results would've been the same.

Even in slo mo, it doesn't look intentional . The Caps player's eyes are fixed elsewhere, on the puck most likely. He was just reacting to Crosby hurtling into him. That said: Reckless, ugly play -- you have to be responsible for your stick, as they say.

 

Also, if Crosby comes out fine in the next period -- I'll eat my hat.
