I have to think Jack lined up the defender to screen Smith. That shot came from between the D's legs. As a goalie, it's much harder to track a puck when you don't see it leave the shooter's stick.

He has his full shot and then he has the little flick-of-the-wrist thingy that catches both Dmen and goalies by surprise.  That goal was the latter.
