Instead of a dangler, I have wire cage "cow catcher" attached to my Hasek-style bird cage.

I actually just sold a combo helmet on eBay a while back. I really liked the visibility but prefer the comfort of the regular mask.

 

I try not to think about skate cuts and the like. It really rarely happens. I just try to be aware of where people's feet are. I'll bail on worrying about a shot if I think I need to brace myself for a collision or put my hands out to block a stray skate. Nature of the game I guess.
