nfreeman Posted August 21, 2024 Report Posted August 21, 2024 So my wife and I watched "Ripley" on Netflix. It was quite good, although more of an artsy slow burn than a pulsating thriller. It's based on a series of novels about an American grifter who moves to Europe in the 1950s. There was a movie starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman about 15 years ago based on the 1st novel. Also, @LabattBlue and others might be interested in the Netflix's show fantastic cinematography -- nearly the entire series is set in Italy. The other interesting item about the show is that it stars a certain former Sabre's twin brother: 1 Quote

mjd1001 Posted September 7, 2024 Report Posted September 7, 2024 (edited) We just saw the new Beetlejuice movie. I loved the original (probably have seen it 15-20 times over the years), love the characters, and after seeing some 'pretty good' reviews overall, couldn't wait to see it. I won't spoil anything or bring up anything specific, but I was really, really disappointed with it. Like it was a lot worse than I thought it could have been. Not even close to the charm of the first, and the characters? In the first I thought every character had a role in the movie, every character you loved or hated. In this one, 2/3s of everyone in the movie I could care less about. Not to make a cheesy macabre joke, but the 'bare bones' were here for a decent story, but it was no where close to being 'fleshed out', not even close. If anyone else saw It I'd like to hear opinions. Edited September 7, 2024 by mjd1001 Quote
Broken Ankles Posted September 27, 2024 Report Posted September 27, 2024 The Tragically Hip documentary - No Dress Rehearsal is just outstanding. If you are a fan of the band you will enjoy this effort by director Mike Downie (Gord’s brother). It’s a four part series with the final episode chronicling the passing of Gord. The doc is streaming on AMZN prime. 1 1 Quote

Indabuff Posted December 27, 2024 Report Posted December 27, 2024 Went to see Sonic 3 with my nine year old son today. That's the most I laughed at Jim Carrey in a very long time. Quote

We like going to the theater a lot to see movies, but most of what we wanted to see we have already. This time of year (January/February) is when we would go the most. My wife and I haven't seen any of the Sonic movies, the thought enterered my mind to watch the first 2 at home and then see the 3rd. But watching the trailers and reading reviews, i cannot tell at all if this is a 'geared at 10 year olds and parents MIGHT enjoy it" movie...or one that can actually be enjoyed by 2 adults with no kids? mjd1001 Posted December 30, 2024 Report Posted December 30, 2024 (edited) I could go either way with Jim Carrey. The Cable Guy, The Grinch, Mr Poppers Penguins, and The Mask not only did I not like them I found him really annoying in them. Really didn't like them. His more serious roles like The Truman show, the Majestic, Eternal Sunshine, or Number 23...whatever, I could take them or leave them. Other ones with him Iove. Liar Liar (although it hasn't aged that well), Dumb and Dumber, The pet Detective movies...yeah they are really dumb but if I'm in the mood for that silly type of comedy, I can love them. Its like watching 'an idiot family member' do dumb things that still make me laugh. Edited December 30, 2024 by mjd1001 Quote
steveoat87 Posted December 30, 2024 Report Posted December 30, 2024 (edited) Been enjoying season 2 of Silo (Apple TV). If you like 1984ish science fiction you will probably enjoy this. Season 2 of Lioness on Paramount was only OK. If you like Stalone you will probably enjoy Tulsa King. I had trouble watching more than 1 episode of the Dune TV series on Max.
