MattPie Posted October 6, 2016 Report Posted October 6, 2016 To think before WWII it were the democrats that those radical elements, even think they started the KKK no ? And it's not like we can sit here pretending that never happened. But the Dems forced the Dixiecrats out. The Republicans made the mistake of welcoming them with open arms. Hot potato. It's easier to frame things as Liberal and Conservative, as those tend to hold meaning better than the party names. A quick timeline of the parties: Lincoln was a Republican. The Union won the Civil War. The South is all, "we hate Republicans, Democrat 4-eva" Northern Democrats in the 60s: "Hey, this whole segregation thing doesn't jive with the 14th Amendment (equal protection)." Southern Democrats (Dixiecrats): Umm, what do we do now? Minorities being treated like humans will be the end of the world. Republicans: Hey, you guys want to come vote for us? We'll listen to you. Former Southern Democrats: Sounds good.

The left-wing, 3rd party of its day. If the Republican party ever got back to its roots, I'd have to consider rejoining.
Doohicksie Posted October 6, 2016 Report Posted October 6, 2016 To think before WWII it were the democrats that those radical elements, even think they started the KKK no ? Yeah, well, Reagan made them Republicans.
Eleven Posted October 6, 2016 Report Posted October 6, 2016 Yeah, well, Reagan made them Republicans. Nixon.
darksabre Posted October 6, 2016 Report Posted October 6, 2016 Nixon. Aye. Reagan just made them feel good about it.
K-9 Posted October 6, 2016 Author Report Posted October 6, 2016 Nixon. Yep. After the passage of the Civil Rights Act, dixiecrats were courted by the GOP and defected in huge numbers. There has never been a shortage of disaffected white men thinking the system screwed them over.
That Aud Smell Posted October 6, 2016 Report Posted October 6, 2016 As someone who avoids the Politics thread(s) like the plague: Is there any chance we can get the two threads merged now that the original has been unlocked?

TrueBlueGED Posted October 6, 2016 Report Posted October 6, 2016 Nixon. Goldwater was the first to try, though...he just wasn't overly successful.
