LGR4GM Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 Should Gionta relinquish his captaincy to Ryan O'Reilly and become an assistant captain this season? I say yes. Not because I dislike Gionta but because it provides ROR an entire year to learn from Gionta if needed while also being the guy. Quote
dudacek Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 I personally think it's a terrible idea. You switch the captains if the leadership is broken. The chemistry and leadership on this team seem to be excellent. Why mess with it? Quote
nucci Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 Couldn't he learn from Gionta as they are now without being named captain? Quote
bob_sauve28 Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 This organization can't disrespect their captain like that, no way! Quote
Drunkard Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 I think Gionta should keep it until he leaves and then put it up for a vote. Quote
SHAAAUGHT!!! Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 I don't think it makes sense unless Gionta requests it. Bergevin even cited the loss of Gionta's leadership as a reason they needed to bring in a vet like Weber. https://www.nhl.com/news/canadiens-gm-marc-bergevin-talks-pk-subban-trade/c-281145516 Quote
LTS Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 I'd bet anything that ROR wouldn't take it. Gionta is the "C" based on, longevity and success in the league, being a good captain, and being in his home market. ROR will be the "C" after Gio retires. Quote
nfreeman Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 There is zero possibility that anyone other than Gionta will be the captain this season. Quote
LGR4GM Posted July 12, 2016 Author Report Posted July 12, 2016 This organization can't disrespect their captain like that, no way! I didn't say the organization takes it away. I said Gionta gives it to ROR because this is ROR team from all accounts. Quote
Randall Flagg Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 Gionta can give it to him if he wants but I would never hold it against him if he doesn't, and honestly, it looks better and probably feels better in the room if Gionta plays out the year as captain and then retires or signs somewhere else, and ROR steps into the naturally-produced vacancy. Mustache of God Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 The answer, in my mind, is very simple. You absolutely let Gionta retain the captaincy for the last year of his contract. It would be an insult to pass it on right now. Next year, when Gionta retires, you obviously assign the "C" to the obvious candidate, Jimmy Vesey, which you promised him in your sales pitch meeting to woo him here. Quote

TrueBlueGED Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 It's Gionta's for one more season. Then it's O'Reilly's, with the As going to some combo of Risto, Eichel, and Reinhart. But whatever, everyone knows whose team this is right now. Quote

TrueBlueGED Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 I doubt Gorges will lose an A before he leaves. Same, but I'm still hoping for a trade :) Quote

This post is full of win, just like Jimmy "top 6 guaranteed" Vesey. Quote
Doohicksie Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 Taking the C away from Gionta would constitute an excessive use of force. Quote
NHLBUFF Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 Once Gio retires I think it should go to Reinhart or Eichel Quote
Doohicksie Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 Once Gio retires I think it should go to Reinhart or Eichel Once Gio retires I think the Sabres should reassess the team dynamic and give it to whomever they feel is best for the job. Quote
Thorner Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 I vote to take it away from Giont now. Kidding. I'll echo the sentiment of almost everyone else in the thread by saying its Gionta's for one more year. Quote
Huckleberry Posted July 12, 2016 Report Posted July 12, 2016 After next Season it will go to Okposo or O'Reilly. Quote
