Taylor Hall traded straight up for Adam Larsson

With all due respect, have you seen the market for defensemen? It took Taylor Hall to get Adam Larsson! The best UFA RHD is Jason freakin' Demers. "Just go out and get one" is just not a viable option. All else equal I'd rather have Taylor Hall right now than Rasmus Ristolainen. However, all else is not equal.

Would it have really taken a player of Halls caliber to get Larsson though or was that what was offered and Edmonton/Chia stumbled over themselves to do whatever it took to get Chias guy? I know its not cheap to trade for a defencemen, but getting a player of Halls caliber into the forward ranks opens the door to make a better forward expendable here for additional help.

 

Now you say it took a Taylor Hall to get Larsson (top tier forward to get a mediocre defencemen w/ potential?), then by that thinking you could also say it only took Larsson to get Taylor Hall. It also took PK Subban to get Shea Weber, or it took Shea Weber to get PK Subban. Theres 2 sides to every trade and from one side it could look like it took a ot to get someone, but from the other it could look like you gave up little to get something better. It took a 1st round pick to get Paul Gaustad, but it also took only Paul Gaustad to get a 1st round pick......

 

A for Demers, i have read that he could be a great signing by a team because of analytics

Well, the Oilers have a plethora of forwards they could have shopped but Hall is the one that moved.  They were shopping Hall based on the Risto comments.  I would say there was a reason they wanted him out of there.  If the Oilers were going around looking (and by all accounts they were the active party) then they targeted Larsson.

 

Either way, there's enough about Hall to create rumblings of what kind of teammate he is and that might scare people away. I am sure its well known in hockey circles but not spread publicly.  

 

I would not have traded Risto for Hall under any circumstances. You weren't going to turn around and get anything close to Risto on the market without overpaying so that trade would have depleted an already thin defense corps.  All in all I watch Risto play and I see a great defenseman in the making.

If they were willing to give up Hall for Risto (straight up swap), TM needs to be fired right now.........

Risto may end up as a top pair defencemen (and I wouldn't be actively looking to trade him, but I would listen to offers on anyone), I just don't see him being in the top 5-10 of the players at his position in the NHL like Hall can be

I'm just sitting here stunned at the idea that GM TM should be fired for NOT trading Risto for Hall straight up.
