I do not believe the bolded statement is true. As far as I am aware Asplund already had a contract with his Swedish team.

Someone will clarify I'm sure, but do these europeans under 20 who sign ELCs but remain over there actually count against the limit?  The rules mention specifically those returned to "juniors", so I'm not sure how that relates to junior aged players who are playing overseas.

It's pretty clear from the article that Jbot wanted him to play one more year in Sweden and then come over. Therefore there was no reason to sign him to a contract now and use up one of the 50 the Sabres are allowed.

 

My understanding is that once a Euro signs he counts against the limit. If he remains, he'll be lent back to his Euro team. I don't think his contract slides either. For example, Ullmark signed a 3 yr ELC in May 2014, but remained in Sweden for 2014-15. He has since played only 2 years here, but is now an RFA.

 

As long as we sign Asplund by the time he is 21, he'll still get a 3 yr ELC.

After the draft, D Camp and what I've read and seen lately, I'd rank our top 15 prospects as follows:

1) Middelstadt - he reminds me of Jack; maybe not the upside, but he is the whole package. "They" said this draft was weaker then last year, but I think this year's 8th overall pick is a better player then last year's 8th overall. One year in college and then ???

2) Guhle - Jbot is likely committed to start him in Rochester, but this kid is going to make it very hard to send him down.

3) Asplund - Looks like he could be a excellent playmaker. Still 2 years from the NHL.

4) Nylander - Talent is there, but I'm wondering if AHL season actually hurt his development/

5) Fasching - Made team out of camp last season, looked really good in D Camp. What's his upside though?

6) Luukkonen - Big goalie who look positionally sound already.

7) Bailey - Size, Speed, physical, only question left is ability to finish in the NHL

8) Baptiste - see Bailey, but not as big and maybe a little better 2 way game.

9) Davidsson - like Asplund last year, had a nearly 1st rd grade. Hopefully he'll progress like Asplund has.

10) Pu - 3rd pick C/W blossomed last season. Can he improve even more this season and push further up this chart.

11) Borgen - Our 2nd best D prospect plays a solid D Zone game. Would like to see a little more O.

12) Malone - local kid, finally was healthy and became a leader for Harvard. Projects as a 3/4 line forward. Don't be surprised if he impresses in camp.

13) Fitzgerald - smallish D who had another solid year at BC.

14) Cornel - 2nd rd pick has talent. Has opportunity in Roch to prove it this season, but f group in Buffalo getting crowded.

15) Johansson - Made move to NA, has time to develop with the other Swedes playing ahead of him. ECHL starter?

If he's not in Buffalo, does it really matter if he's playing in Sweden rather than Rochester? We'd still have his rights. Provided the team was on board with his choice, don't think it'd be too big a deal.

It's Hamilton so take this with a grain of salt, but he reported on ESPN Rochester that he heard a rumor, that he has been unable to confirm mind you, Nylander wants to go back to Sweden if he doesn't make the Sabres out of camp.

 

I believe the Sabres have final say on that decision

I think I'm fine with this.  Only issue is he wouldn't be able to be recalled during the season I believe?
