Drunkard Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 I don't know much about Kulikov. Anyone care to fill me in and enable my laziness? I think Pysyk will only ever be a decent/good 3rd pairing guy with the ability to play spot duty on the 2nd. I had high hopes for him to be a legit 2nd pairing guy before this season, but he wasn't anything special. He's smart, smooth, and has a nice first pass; but he doesn't assert himself anywhere near enough on either side of the ice. I could be wrong, but I don't think he'll ever be a difference maker. Not a bad pick for a #21/#22 overall, but definitely not good enough to mitigate how pathetic all the rest of Darcy's picks were around that time. To be fair, we didn't have room for him in the top 4 with Ristolainen and Bogosian. Glad we were able to flip a righty for a southpaw though. Plus Kulikov is only a year older but has played 3 times as many NHL games. Plus were were able to move up from 38 to 33 for a 3rd round pick. I'll take it. Quote

That Aud Smell Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Given that we're moving up in 2nd rd, seems like we more or less swapped a RHD for a LHD. Quote
LGR4GM Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 I like Kulikov. He's 5 defender though. Solid but not spectacular Quote
Drunkard Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Given that we're moving up in 2nd rd, seems like we more or less swapped a RHD for a LHD. Yep. Plus we gave up another expendable 3rd rouder. It would be funny if Murray trades the other two 3rds to move up in to the late 2nd round. Start with four 3rds and not make a single pick in the 3rd round. Quote
PromoTheRobot Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Why are people saying we overpaid? It looks like an even trade but for a third. Is it because Kulikov is going to be a FA? Quote

Stoner Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 I don't know anything about Kulikov's temperament, but I suspect this move has to do with bringing in a Murray-type player. Pysyk was pretty bland on and off the ice. Quote
Hoss Posted June 25, 2016 Author Report Posted June 25, 2016 Basically we traded up in the second then swapped Pysyk for Kulikov. I really like it. Cheap price to pay and we still have a plethora of forwards and picks to deal if we need to. Quote

nobody Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Trading a second pair defensemen and two picks for a second pair defenseman and one pick. Who costs 3.5mil more in salary and is a ufa after this season. Quote
SDS Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Pysyk was never going to survive the expansion draft. Quote
Stoner Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Who costs 3.5mil more in salary and is a ufa after this season. I was just going to mention the salary. 4.5 vs. 1.25. Kulikov is a former first round pick, too. So what's the catch? Quote
ExWNYer Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Not saying I like or not like it, Just didn't see it coming Yeah, this is where I am. I'm just a little baffled as to why they traded assets for an older, upcoming UFA. Maybe they were that high on Asplund and felt they needed to get up to 33 to secure him? Quote

Thorner Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Really like the trade. http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=11866 Write up: An offensive defenseman who moves the puck well. A good skater with a good shot. Understands the game well. Good on powerplay and plays an excellent passing game. Needs to upgrade his physical game and be more secure in his own zone. Seems about right for what we need. This means our defense next year just got worse. It got better, trade filled a need. Who costs 3.5mil more in salary and is a ufa after this season. We'll sign him. Quote

Kulikov is far more physical than Pysyk, which I will guess goes with be a lefty as the primary reasons for the Sabres interest. Quote

It also sounds like exactly the guy we traded to get him, except he was younger and not on his way to UFA status in a year. Quote
matter2003 Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Goes to show it was true what Paul Hamilton said all year....fans and media were much more impressed with Pysyk than the Sabres were... Quote
Rasmus_ Posted June 25, 2016 Report Posted June 25, 2016 Kulikov is a heavy hitter. His offense never really picked up to meet his draft prospectus. Also, Pysyk was not a "Murray guy". Quote
