So is Risto a Josi, or a Myers/Bogosian?   I don't think anybody truly knows the answer to that... but I do know this.    If you give him 8-years, you're pushing all your chips into the middle of the table... pre-flop.     If you give him a shorter deal, even a bridge, you're simply calling the big blind to see the flop... and there's no reason you can't still go all-in on the river.   I'd say Risto is comparable to suited connectors or a small pocket pair... yes, those are nice starting hands, but you don't go all-in pre-flop unless you're heads up and down to a few big blinds.    The Sabres are not at that point yet, they're just warming up their seat at the table... with (hopefully) many hands to play, let them see a few flops and build a nice chip stack before pushing all-in.

In my view, we've already seen the flop. That's our fundamental disagreement, in a nutshell.

Bargain contracts can come in forms other then just hitting on a developing player with a long-term deal. Mccabe's 3 year bridge deal, ELC's for Jack and Sam are just a couple of other examples of bargain deals. Other type of bargains are signing some vets with tread left on the tire. Building a championship team means paying the right players, developing kids and making smart veteran acquisitions to fill in the holes.

Signing the wrong players, but internally and externally, can kill a franchise. Aka Leino, Hodgson, Ehrhoff, and Myers.

Are not ELC's dictated by the league as to term and $?

So, they are neither a bargain, or not, right?

ELCs are certainly one source of bargain contracts, but I don't know why anyone would be more confident in hitting on those (seeing as we're not going to be drafting top-10 anymore unless something goes horribly wrong) than betting on the development we've seen out of Risto in one AHL season and two NHL seasons.

Wouldn't you consider it a bargain if a guy puts up 60-80 points on an ELC?   I certainly would.

I understand your reasoning, but for me a bargain is when I can get something for less than what others would pay in an open and free market.

Therefore, since the NHL dictates term and $ for ELCs then they are neither a bargain, nor not a bargain, as every other team would have paid the same for Sam and Eich on their ELCs.

I think bargain is is shorthand for production per cap-hit kilodollar in the context, not contract vs. market.

Really?  Interesting....  < 200 games played for a 21 year-old defenseman is all you need to see?   While I like his chances to develop into a top pairing guy, I still think his career could go in any direction

Depends on the defenseman. I've seen what I need to out of Risto to think the upside of a longterm deal outweighs the risk-mitigation of a bridge.

You didn't click the link, did you? :p

Okay, I guess getting Rick rolled is better than a bridge deal

You can't fool me, I hover over all links before I click them. I had too many pranksters in my friend group in HS/college. I don't think I can stand another second of meatspin.com

Meatspin. Retro.
