Claude_Verret Posted May 25, 2016 Report Posted May 25, 2016 It's gonna be an expensive ticket, checked vividseats just now for the 8/10 show and floor seats in first 10 rows going for $900-ish, lower bowl $300-400 and nose bleeds around $200. I'm still going to make every effort to go. Quote
Claude_Verret Posted May 26, 2016 Report Posted May 26, 2016 Great piece on Gord by Ron McLean http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/music-life-gord-downie-wherewithal/ Buffalo Sabre Darryl Shannon played me his favourite song, “The Luxury,” on the jukebox at Mother’s Restaurant in Buffalo, N.Y. Gord will be putting himself out there this summer, playing with words, his music at work, demonstrating why he will remain fully and completely in our present forever. He has the wherewithal. Quote

Taro T Posted May 26, 2016 Report Posted May 26, 2016 Was living in the south when NOIS was getting a lot of air play (even down there). Was back visiting home later that year and heard it come on Q107. Mentioned something to my buddy about that being an example of how great Canadian radio was & he pointed out that of course they were on Canadian radio; they're friggin' Canadian!  Sorry to read that this is the end for Gord. :( Quote
Claude_Verret Posted May 26, 2016 Report Posted May 26, 2016 (edited) I think Canadian radio stations are mandated to play a certain percentage of Canadian artist music on a daily basis. It is a good thing, I always listened to 97.7, 102.1 and 107.7 more than 97 rock or 103.3. it's how I learned about great bands like the Hip, the headstones, Sloan, our lady peace etc. Edited May 26, 2016 by Claude_Verret Quote

Grew up listening to them. I must have recorded so many cassette tapes off the radio. Did you know I Mother Earth just went back on tour? They've got some new singles out too. I'm crossing my fingers that maybe we'll get a new album next year. Quote

Q107 was my go to station & 97.7 the fallback. 102.1 not so much, but Rush did dedicate "The Spirit of Radio" to them. Quote

The Odds, Blue Rodeo, 54-40, Spirit of the West, Rush..damn I might as well be Canadian if defined by my musical tastes. Quote

Sabres Fan in NS Posted May 26, 2016 Report Posted May 26, 2016 CFNY in Toronto (102.1) was the station of my youth. Played what they termed an *alternative* format ... the only radio station that played punk and post punk new wave exclusively. One day they sold their souls and changed the format ... radio has never been the same since, especially since there are no more *pirate* radio stations out there. The Clash told the story of *pirate* radio in Capital Radio One ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRBE74-nkZ0 This song and band changed my life. Quote
darksabre Posted May 26, 2016 Author Report Posted May 26, 2016 When I was younger and radio signals weren't as strong, getting a little 102.1 was always a special treat. Now you can get it pretty easily around here. We like to call it "The Good Edge", a cheeky diss against the Buffalo based 103.3 The Edge, of the same format. Quote
Claude_Verret Posted June 1, 2016 Report Posted June 1, 2016 Well I was shut out on tickets along with most people in the presale and folks aren't happyy with the sleazy scalpers and their ticket purchasing bots scooping up all the tickets. https://www.thestar.com/entertainment/music/2016/06/01/tragically-hip-fan-frustration-was-tragically-predictable-rayner.html One friend of mine did manage to get tickets to the Ottawa show and he said I can have one, but logistically it will be almost impossible for me to make it. In a little bit of good news, it's possible that CBC may air the final show from the the Hip's hometown of Kingston. http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/tragically-hip-kingston-broadcast-cbc-1.3609414 Quote

Claude_Verret Posted June 17, 2016 Report Posted June 17, 2016 It would be awesome if they played this at Canalside or something. I hear they are already planning a huge outside viewing area in Kingston for the show, I'm sure there might be some legal wrangling to do but it doesn't look like anything is scheduled at canalside on 8/20. Claude_Verret Posted July 22, 2016 Report Posted July 22, 2016 Well the tour kicks off tonight in BC, with dudacek in attendance. I've been on a hip kick since the announcement and have re-discovered so many lost gems from the back catalog...Family band, coffee girl, world container, darkest one, chagrin falls, dire wolf, it can't be nashville every night, Toronto #4, morning moon, the depression suite, Escape is at hand for the travellin' man.....and on and on. So many great songs beyond the "hits". http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/tragically-hip-farewell-tour-victoria-bc-1.3684118 I'm still going to try to make a Toronto show when I'm at Chautauqua Lake next month if at all possible. I've been listening to Brad Riter's Hip Story podcasts as well, with some great stories from guests like Sully, Vogl, Amy Moritz among others. Great stuff. http://www.trendingbuffalo.com/category/commentary/podcast/hip-story-pod/ The new album is stellar too.. Quote
Weave Posted July 22, 2016 Report Posted July 22, 2016 Oh, man. You are going back to Chautauqua? Jelly. My favorite Hip tune? Quote
