Eleven Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 So, it's pretty easy to identify the best Sabres (and NHL) goaltender ever. Same with center, although that hopefully changes soon. Wing? It begins with an M, whether you prefer Martin or Mogilny. But what about the best D man? Two categories: true D-man and offensive D-man. For me, for true D-man, it's Schoenfeld, with McKee right behind him. I hope Risto eclipses them, but he's not there yet. Offensive D-man has to be Housley, right? Quote
Eleven Posted May 23, 2016 Author Report Posted May 23, 2016 Schoney or Ramsey. #5 is a good call. I place 74 ahead of him, but it's not exactly an easy contest. Quote
Carmel Corn Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 IMHO - from an offensive standpoint, John Van Boxmeer had the best shot from the point Quote
Weave Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 #5 is a good call. I place 74 ahead of him, but it's not exactly an easy contest. I'll take Ramsey over McKee all day, every day. Schony Ramsey Housley Zhitnick Quote

Schony Ramsey Housley Zhitnick The fact that 44 even is on your list brings your sanity into question. IMHO - from an offensive standpoint, John Van Boxmeer had the best shot from the point He did have a good shot. He wasn't here very long, and he certainly wasn't worth what Bowman traded for him (even a broken Rene Robert), but yeah, he had a shot. Only because you never saw Jocelyn Guervernmont(sic) I'm not sure McKee was ever the best defenseman on his team let alone of all time Give me a better defensive D-man on this team. If you say Hank, I will at least say it's an argument: http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/BUF/2006.html Quote
Eleven Posted May 23, 2016 Author Report Posted May 23, 2016 Tyler Myers ;) I regret not putting "no shitposts" in the original, but really, why come with this? Surely you've got a real opinion on stuff, right? Quote

I haven't watched the Sabres long enough to have an opinion. I personally liked Brian Campbell and Jason Woolley. Quote
Weave Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 (edited) The fact that 44 even is on your list brings your sanity into question. Kid was a horse while he was here. And he was saddled with Baby Huey as a partner. That can't be understated. Very few Sabres D men that were All Star worthy over their history. Z was one. McKee was good. Not Ramsey good though. Probably Bodger good without the powerplay skill. On an all Sabres D team, he's probably 3rd pair. Edited May 23, 2016 by We've Quote
Rasmus_ Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Ramsey for me, but I don't have as extensive a track record as some on the board. So I would say Ramsey for me. Quote
Neo Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 (edited) Ramsey Schoeny Housley ... He's so unique and therefore hard to compare to others McKee, Hajt, Wooley, Korab, Bodger .... (Waiting for comment, here) Edited May 23, 2016 by N'eo Quote

(Waiting for comment, here) Bodger is unsung. McKee and Hajt might be a good comparison. McKee and Uwe Krupp comparable? Quote
dudacek Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Zhitnik was under appreciated because of his follies on the PP. Dude was pretty good, but not all-time. Ramsey gets my vote, then Schoeny. You know, Schoeny was more consistent but his game was pretty much Bogosian. Different era. Quote
TrueBlueGED Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Zhitnik was better than McKee *ducks* Quote
Weave Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Zhitnik was better than McKee *ducks* I've got your back. Quote
Taro T Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Zhitnik was better than McKee *ducks* He was. He was a very solid #2 D-man. Unfortunately for him, he was forced to be a 1 and was saddled w/ "clears the puck ... not out" as his partner. :censored: Quote
Neo Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 I have to add Zhitnik to my list. He ate, ate, minutes against top pairs. Quote
TrueBlueGED Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 I find this lack of Zhitnik hate pleasantly surprising. Everyone I grew up with hated him. Of course, we were all like 13 and not exactly sophisticated fans, but still. Quote
Weave Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 I'm not sure McKee was ever the best D man on his team. He played with Zhitnick and Warrener early, then Teppo and Campbell later. Add in Patrick too. I find this lack of Zhitnik hate pleasantly surprising. Everyone I grew up with hated him. Of course, we were all like 13 and not exactly sophisticated fans, but still. He was hated in the moment, but almost every Sabre was hated in the moment during those years. A legacy of playoff failure will do that. Quote
Weave Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Honorable Mention for #22 Lindy Ruff. Pass. Quote
Weave Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Larry Playfair when we played the Bruins. I have fond memories of watching Playfair dismantle Gord Kluzak from the lower Blues behind Boston's net. Playfair was all time toughest Sabre. Had the heavyweight crown for a bit. Quote
