I think this does sort of get to the issue that I am interested in discussing: How do fans of the OneBuffalo teams feel about the potential for Pegula Sports and Entertainment to be courting not just out of town fans, but fans of opposing teams?

Taking it to a different level: How about courting corporate entities based in rival markets? Like, what if following a reconfiguration of the NFL divisions (where the new AFC North is Browns, Bengals, Steelers, Bills (I've heard this may happen)) PSE were to sell a suite, or perhaps a share in a suite, in the FNC and in the new football stadium to Dick's Sporting Goods (based in Pittsburgh, btw) with the idea being that Dick's would bring Penguin and Steeler fans to Buffalo for games? I'm just spit balling here.

Is it courtship or informing out of town fans that there is now more to do and options to stay when visiting? There have always been out of town fans at Buffalo games. Edited by PromoTheRobot

It was the Sabres-centric nature of the article that raised my suspicions. Why wouldn't the write have said, "After the final horn, Leafs fans can try to recoup their losses by visiting the Seneca Buffalo Casino just down the street from the arena, passing the Cobblestone District on the way. If there's any money left, they can stay at one of the hotels in the area, yada yada yada including the Adam's Mark, right up the street"?

Somewhat off topic:  I know you don't live here, but you picked the two dingiest possible substitutions.  That casino is gross and the Adam's Mark isn't much better.

Lafayette Hotel and, I don't know, anything but that casino, maybe?

Sure. The locations aren't important. Anything downtown works. Why not mention Chippewa?

How much time do you have?

(Wait.  Don't answer that.)

"After the game, take a short 15 minute transit ride, filled with drunken Sabres fans down to Chippawa street, where you can get into a fight waiting in line for one of Jim's Stakeout's famous chicken finger subs."

Would you believe that I have coworkers who go there for lunch?  It's barely edible when drunk.

Oh, Lord.

I stayed there in 2012. I didn't think it was terrible. I'm not that picky though. No cooties and I'm good to go.

Did I go for oh-fer-three or was the Cobblestone reference OK? I've noticed some cool-looking taverns and such over there. Just not sure why everything has to be funneled through 716.

Why don't you take it up with the writer and invite him back to experience those venues?

In the meantime, I wonder how cynical one needs to be not to appreciate an organization touting its amenities after sinking $200m to build them.

GO SABRES!!!

Want to know what I just got out of the last half dozen posts?

If it's not a Pegula entity it's not worth going to in Buffalo.

Oh, far from it.  Hope you didn't get that from mine.

Yes,no, maybe.

If I didn't know better, I would assume from the posts Buffalo doesn't.

But I do know better and Buffalo has some wonderful locally owned, non big corporate type establishments. I view 716 as the locally owned big corporate place. I'm in the minority I believe, but 716 is not my idea of *having a drink in a relaxing atmosphere with good service* place.

I'm more of a Cole's on Elmwood guy.

But is that any different than any other city in North America? No. The locals know where to hang. Not that I'm a local anymore. But I do know places I like in WNY and would like to try new ones to me.

Kind of a long winded answer to * Please tell me where you would have gone?* Not, not where to go, only.

I'm w/ you on 716, definitely.

There are so many options besides Chippewa, though.  And even Chippewa has a couple of places that aren't infested with overgrown adolescents.

You didn't read SDS' summary of the Gilbert interview. The Sabres were not doing the touting.

I missed that, too; I spent a couple of days away.  Can you point me to it?

What's the homemade-by-hipsters sausage place right by the arena? That place was great.

EDIT: just found it. Ballyhoo. Cool place.

Never heard of it.  I'll have to try it out.

It is hard to understand how badly this is being misinterpreted. The Sabres were definitely doing the touting. The difference is that a third party was pulling the information from them - they were not pushing it. The path of least resistance between the author and payday was how quickly he could repackage the information he asked for and was subsequently given.

To channel my inner GDD... If a dog does his business in a park, some people witness this and think the dog just pooped. Another group who witnessed the same event decided to speculate that ISIS could have infected the dog with a fatal virus and the dog has been sent to distribute the deadly virus among the population via the drinking wells. When the owner, a Jewish lady in her mid-50's, is confronted with questions regarding the defecation, the owner is concerned that everyone is on drugs and is frightened that seemingly reasonable people have in-depth questions about a lawn turd. Truly frightened.

After reporting this back to the masses that the dog was just indeed taking a poop, the ISIS speculators retort that of course the owner was going to deny the distribution of a deadly virus by their biological warfare delivery vehicle, duh! and continue to chortle about the lack of evidence disproving their perfectly reasonable theory.

I think the ideas was to highlight what is in the immediate FNC area. Grant it there could have been some mention of Buffalo Iron Works, Lagerhaus 95 and Helium comedy club, all just around the corner in the Cobblestone district. But Canalside and Harborcenter are what you see going in and coming out of the FNC.

Back in 2003 I attended the NCAA Frozen Four at what was then HSBC Arena. (The one where Thomas Vanek wowed everyone.)  I walked out of the building with a number of out of town fans who looked around and had no idea where to get a bite or a drink. All you could see in every direction was desolation. An empty waterfront, and abandoned Aud and a boarded-up Donavan State Office building full of asbestos.

If you are someone who swore off going to Buffalo ten years ago, THAT is your lingering memory of the place! So I'm willing to forgive whoever is responsible for trying to lure some more out-of-towners back to the foot of Washington St. The place was a hellscape not that long ago.
