Eleven Posted April 7, 2016 Report Posted April 7, 2016 Drouin was called up this morning to the big club If he plays the remaining 2 games, it burns a year off of his ELC and diminishes his trade value accordingly. They'd be smart to scratch him for one game. Quote

This ought to be interesting. Quote

nfreeman Posted April 7, 2016 Report Posted April 7, 2016 Burning a year of his ELC seems highly ill-considered. Quote
Sabel79 Posted April 7, 2016 Report Posted April 7, 2016 I don't think the ELC is the issue, it's accruing a full year of NHL service which makes him a UFA one year earlier. Quote

Haven't looked REAL close @ the CBA in a while, but unless his failure to report to the minors invokes a penalty, not sure how he loses (gains, more precisely) a year of playing on an ELC. Quote

Sabel79 Posted April 7, 2016 Report Posted April 7, 2016 I see what the confusion is. The Lightning tried to have the contract tolled, and the NHL said no. Rightly, IMHO. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/jonathan-drouin-will-burn-year-off-entry-level-contract/ Quote

Sabel79 Posted April 7, 2016 Report Posted April 7, 2016 Had the Lightning successfully lobbied the NHL to toll the contract it would have effectively added another year onto it, making him wait until 2018 to be an RFA. Instead, he's an RFA after next year. Quote
rakish Posted April 7, 2016 Report Posted April 7, 2016 So the call-up had no effect whatsoever on his ELC? Yes. If he's not on the roster the final two games, he doesn't get the accrued year toward his UFA, but that doesn't affect when he becomes a RFA (This year his ELC burns one year no matter). We disagree on how that affects his value, I think they don't give him the 2 games on the roster, they must trade him, further lessening his value to Tampa, despite also decreasing his value to the receiving team. I would give him the two games, but I'm not a war-time consigliere. Quote
LGR4GM Posted April 7, 2016 Report Posted April 7, 2016 Tampa's handling of this situation leaves something to be desired. Yzerman hasn't done great with Stamkos or Drouin thus far. Granted it is obviously not all on him but he should either or get off the pot with these guys. Quote
