Dump and chase and dump and chase and chase and chase and dump and chase

That is the modern day NHL, not enough players who try to carry the puck in the offensive zone.

Instead of making wider nets they should hit the coaches on the head for using that tactic.

Are there any stats on how often they regain possession of the puck after the dump in?

Ohhh boy are there. True have me a whole article on it. To summarize it briefly, you get the puck back, score more, are scored on less, and have better chances carrying the puck in, by about a 3:1 ratio IIRC. If you want I can dig it up again, it was a great, short read

Sure, would love to read it.

They haven't.  Even shots on goal.  They got through the long change without totally blowing the game.

Looks like they're in survival mode to me; no sooner do they gain possesion in their zone and then dump it out into the neutral zone just to have Detroit grab up the puck. I'm not sure not "blowing it" would be indicative of playing well.
