This is where I'm at.

McGinn's cap hit is $2.95 & he's making $3 this year. IF they can get him back at ~$3.5/ for 3-4 years AFTER trading him; make it happen. But (assuming DB is here to stay), he isn't a fit for the 3rd line & I would really like to see him upgraded out of the top 2 lines next year (or 2 years down the line at most). That makes him a 4th line PP front of the net specialist. This team already has 1 $5MM version of that - they don't need a 2nd $5MM (or even $4MM) one IMHO. Though as mentioned by someone above, he doesn't look out of place on the top 2 lines, so he can fill in there as needed. But since he'll be lucky to break 20 goals, don't want him on L1 & would prefer to not have him on L2 either.

Gretzky had his Tikkanen.

And don't point out Esa's numbers, either.  We all know that a 30 goal player in 1985 is a 16 goal player today.

Never seen a player want to kill McGinn just for chattering @ him. Tikkanen was truly a 1 of a kind. When Muckler was in his "Edmonton East" phase, was very disappointed that he never got that guy in B&G.

its all assuming he wants to sign in Buffalo, he may just want to test FA.

he is having a fine year as the top line winger and on the top PP. . This is a lot to do about a guy who has 22 points on the season while playing top line minutes.

However, I would still argue he isn't a top line winger on a Cup Contender and his numbers would drop significantly if he was placed properly on the 3rd line

Trade him now while he has value!

Judge Advocate General or Just Another Guy?

Whatevahs, I think McGinn and Foligno are functionally identical but Foligno brings the heavy, is younger, and doesn't have a back injury hanging over him.  If GMTM sees the need for that kind of player, but only one, Foligno is likely to stay.  He has been having a good season for the role he's supposed to play.  McGinn is also more likely to bring the larger return.

I was thinking Jean-Andre Gragnani, Marc-Andre's less-responsibe-in-his-own-end cousin.

I would prefer that McGinn is on this team going forward but if he wants more than $3.5M then walk away. I also think the Foligno comparisons are bad. McGinn brings more offense and consistency. I don't think Foligno is an NHL player and I hope he gets shipped out.

Disagree on Foligno.   He's only 24.    He has size and speed (when he uses it).    He has much more upside than McGinn, I'm willing to give him another 2 years to blossom.

still 3rd from the bottom   https://www.talk.hockey/tank-tracker/

if BUF loses and EDM+TOR win, say hello to 29th place.

You've got no shot at this bet my friend.  See how well Lehner is playing?  Sabres are finally healthy again and Jack has been supermodel hot over the past month.  Only chance you have for the bottom 5 is the lottery :P

I was in 100% agreement until the bolded.  He's a 4th liner all day long.  McGinn is 2nd-3rd line easy for the reasons you mentioned.

I agree with this, but I'm 90% confident that $5MM waste #1 is going to be bought out this summer.

I would be very surprised if he didn't go to FA and get a fattest contract he can get.  This is his one shot at a big contract.

Having said that, I think it's quite possible that no one offers him materially more than the Sabres do this summer (after trading him at the deadline), and thus he returns.

I think it would be a mistake to buy out Moulson. Given his age if he gets bought out over the summer wouldn't his cap hit be roughly $2.5 million for the next 6 years? I'd rather be stuck with the $5 million hit for 3 years or hopefully we could trade him. I'm not a fan of retaining salary on guys who don't have expiring contracts though since I think you can only do that with 2 contracts at any one time and that may make it tough to get other deals done when we are trying to push for the playoffs in a year or two. That would definitely limit who would take him in a trade but that's still a better alternative than having a multi-million cap hit on him until the spring of 2023.

I agree. The Sabres are going to need every penny of cap space down the road.

Yea, I don't think I posted it, but I recently played with the buyout calculator and financially I don't think it makes sense to buy him out at any point in the contract. The cap savings over putting him in Rochester just isn't worth the extra years his cap hit would be on the books from a buyout. I think the smartest move is to keep him around and hope he retires in the next two years or the expansion draft saves us, or as a last resort send him to the AHL.

Yea, someone else on board.

Meh. He's a 4th liner or out of the NHL and nobody notices the difference. He's a fringe NHLer, at best. I don't consider that to be an NHL player.

I think McGinn brings it more consistently than Foligno and has substantially better finish than Deslauriers.

Having said that, I wouldn't give him much more than the #s I mentioned upthread, and I definitely want the Sabres to trade him at the deadline.

This is where I am as well.

In a league where Brian Flynn is a regular 4th liner, Foligno (with his size) is absolutely an NHLer.  His consistency issues make him a 4th liner, though.

Ha!  I have to admit, I'm getting nervous... although I'm not cheering for losses (I swore I'd never do that again after last season).

Sure, they're on a nice run, but let's see what the team looks like after the trade deadline.

What I'm saying is he shouldn't be. Nor should Flynn.

I just think yours overeating the quality of 4th line players around the league. And I definitely disagree with your earlier assertion that 4th line players are basically AHL players.

That said, I'm done with Foligno. I think I can find what he does for less money.

This is what I was referring to. Am I drawing the incorrect inference here?
