Why Ryan O’Reilly solves math equations while he works out

That’s just one of the legion of training tricks Ryan O’Reilly gets thrown his way from his father, Brian, while working out during the off-season. The motivation behind them goes to the heart of Ryan’s training philosophy: combine physical and mental training to imitate game situations so you can adapt to anything thrown your way on the ice.

With such an unorthodox trainer, Ryan has one of the most unusual off-season regimens in the NHL. Every summer, he trains at the family’s home just north of London, Ont., under the watchful eye of his father, who’s constantly challenging him with mind games while he works out his body. Another trick Brian tries is shouting random math questions.

“He hates to lose,” said his older brother Cal, who’s played 113 games in the NHL. “As a kid…he was younger than me and my friends, but he’d always play with us. Whenever he lost, he’d start throwing sticks at everybody, so we knew to start running as soon as the game was over, because he’d start freaking out.”

Pretty cool article about O'Reilly's offseason workout routine with his dad. In all honesty, I'm kind of surprised athletes don't do this more often.

The second quote cracks me up. I thoroughly enjoy watching ROR on the ice and love that he's only 24 and going to be around for a while.

That's....

A great idea.

ROR might actually be insane. I love it

Same.

I know it gets said, but there is truth to it: This sort of stuff is Drury-esque. I think ROR may have a better physical skill set than Drury, actually. Drury might have had a better knack for potting the puck. But there are real similarities there -- starting principally with this vibe that they are POSSESSED of a a distaste for losing.

He doesn't even emote when he scores, he just turns around to celebrate with his teammates. His face looks business-like, perhaps even a little relieved.

Drury-ish.

This is such a great observation.

Too bad he can't navigate the distance between a parking space and a doughnut store window with a .18 BAC.....

Sometimes good people make mistakes.

but we need to avoid another Cody Hodgson trains with Gary Roberts theme.

Why? Because our theories might somehow affect reality? I probably could not think of a player whose story-to-date has less bearing on ROR than Hodgson.

I'll pump out a 1300 SAT score while mounting Sophia Vegara.

That first piece, quite possibly. The second, not a chance. At least not lawfully.

The SAT is out of 2400 now...

I'm pretty sure that makes his claim of 1300 quite believable.  And the idea that he's thinking of math with Sophia Vegara in the room.......

Not that there is anything wrong with that.
