The wife and I are planning a trip to Vegas in February.  I think we'll wind up staying on the strip, close to everything, but are there certain places we should aim for?  I think we'll be going for a middle of the pack place in terms of pricing.  Anything else in the area we should go out of our way to see?

We did not rent a car and stayed in old town or center city, or what ever they call the area where casinos are older than the life expectancy of men's underwear.

Pro's

Can walk to multiple casinos, they are closer and you can casino hop.

They don't seem as loud as the strip ones. For the first first few days you don't mind the noise, but after a while it's like your Quasi Moto living in the bell tower of Notre Dame.

Con's

Their dated. Not as big and glitzy. Your not getting your picture taken in or around them.

Not sure how long your staying or if your renting a car.

Hoover Dam.  Nice 1/2 day trip.

My 2 cents.

I've always stayed at Planet Hollywood, because that's where the convention I go to is located. The nice thing is most of the others are walking distance from there. We only got a taxi for a few off strip things, and even then the weather has been nice enough (for me) in January that we've simply walked to some places given enough time.

We didn't really do any sightseeing though. Most of the time was at the convention. We caught a few shows before/after the convention, but those were at other casinos, or went to eat at this German Restaurant off the strip. I think in the three years I've gone, I've only ridden in a taxi twice (not counting to/from the airport).

I go there a few times a year.    Last time stayed at the Mirage, centrally located on the strip, moderately priced compared to other casinos, nice pool, nice restaurants, would highly recommend.

Same here, we always stay at the Mirage.  A potentially cheaper option that's centrally located on the strip would be Harrah's.

Mirage and MGM were two that were showing up yesterday with some prices I was very comfortable with.  I'd imagine that as long as I avoid the one or two places that most people aren't crazy about, I should be fine.  Still, I'd much rather hear comments from threads like this as opposed to online reviews.  I have a hard time getting anything out of those.

You can't go wrong with MGM or The Mirage. Both are nice joints. I'd stay out of old Vegas/Freemont Street, unless you love being handed 200 flyers for hookers every day.

My parents stay exclusively at the Mirage when they go to Vegas. They love it.

I've stayed at the California (Fremont St), Rio (off the strip), and South Point (way south on LVB).  All were fine for what I wanted them to be, in order: a cheapish place near Freemont that was walkable and easy to get super up with friends; a nice place with suites that I could stay for a week separated from -but easy taxi access to- the Strip (being on the west side was handy for what I was doing); the cheapest thing I could find for a quick overnight with easy driving access.

Would probably recommend Rio, but you may want to be better located.

I'm assuming you aren't big gamblers? That would change your options as good perks could get you close to a free stay.

I fully endorse Mirage. Maybe the best overall balance and value of the big name places. Location is decent.

I would avoid Rio. Not to say you can't have a positive experience, but between being secluded and adding the riff raff that tends to be there it isn't in my top 30.

The best overall to me is Paris. Same price range as Mirage but a little more central. It has a clean feel and the gambling floor is pleasant and not overcrowded. It's very lady friendly too. The Eiffel Tower, outside cafe, french bakery. And you are across the street from Bellagio, so if you pull out a tenskie to give to the check in clerk, there is a good chance of getting a high floor with a view of the strip and fountain. Paris is an easy walk to a lot of the other big places. It's connected to Ballys which is where I stay on a guy trip, and the rooms are half as much while being on the same property, but with a lady the extra 80 a night at Paris hopefully pays for itself.

Make sure right after check in you get signed up for players club cards and use then when you gamble. The old law of vegas was to comp 30% in freebies back to the customer based on their expected loss for games played. Your wife spins a 1 dollar slot 10 times a minute for 4 hours, she's supposed to lose 250 bucks and at an old school place you are getting 75 bucks back in a combo of food, room and play. It's not as good on the strip as corporations took over, but if you guys bring a budget to potentially lose more than a few dollars, talk to a host and maybe you get a buffet trip, or some free tickets to a show on a weekday.

Maybe Brian Blessing could hook you up as a Sabres fan.

I'm laying -650 he at least reads this board.

Son of a Beetch. We walked around and no body bothered us. Had a great time. Such is life I guess.

...and stay away from The Rio.   Stayed there for a hockey tournament and saw a guy get stabbed at the blackjack table right next to me.   Blood everywhere, big fight broke out... they shut down the casino floor.   I felt like I was in an episode of CSI.     Anyway, years ago The Rio was nice, now it's a seedy run down joint.    Just stay away from that part of town in general.
