Calgary shouldn't have been a playoff team.  Their advanced stats from what I remember are off.

I think I know what you're saying: Calgary was an aberration last year.

Even so, the post, as written, exalts #fancystats too much. Calgary should have been a playoff team last season because they were in fact a playoff team last season.

Not just that but a conference semi-finalist after knocking off the 'Nucks in the first round.

If/when Pysyk gets to the top 4, he'll be on the left side. I'd expect that until he's ready / DB is comfortable w/ Pysyk in the top 4, that Bogo slides to the left, most likely w/ Franson but possibly w/ Risto. If he's healthy, Gorges definitely starts thevyear in the top 4.

I don't think handedness is going to drive the membership in the top 4.

If Murray says Franson is top-4, I think that means he plays top-4 minutes and is on one of the top 2 pairs.  That puts Pysyk on the 3rd pair, which, as I mentioned above, seems eminently logical given Pysyk's lack of experience.

So in these cases, we could perhaps be looking at something like this to start:

Gorges - Ristolainen

Bogosian - Franson

Weber - Pysyk

As long as we are comfortable with Ristolainen getting top pair minutes at this stage, and Bogosian is comfortable playing on the left, these would work.

Eventually, Pysyk would supplant Bogosian on the left, Bogosian moves to the right in place of Franson, and Franson can move to the third pair.

From a pure talent perspective I think it makes the most sense to do this:

Pysyk-Bogosian

Gorges (assuming he can skate)-Ristolainen

Weber-Franson

However, that Weber-Franson pairing would be absolutely brutalized if caught in a bad matchup against a speedy line. I think putting Pysyk with Franson would make a ton of sense from a complementary skill perspective, but there's no F'n way I want both Gorges and Weber getting top-4 minutes. The whole thing is kind of an odd fit this year, unless McCabe shows he's ready.

This.  I know management likely wants him playing big minutes on Roch but I wouldn't be surprised if he plays well enough in camp to stick.

You are right, I was high in Butler but I don't recall ever seeing him as a top pairing guy. I think depending on the other d-men, Pysyk is a solid 2/3 guy with a long career ahead of him.

By the way, you could throw in a few examples of me correctly showing love for certain prospects.

Well, since this is a full-service message board, I did a search for "Tom Webster" and "high."

In addition to a number of Cheech & Chong films, here are the Sabres-related search results:  you were high on:

Pysyk

Butler

Foligno

Larsson

Hodgson, Stafford and Stewart (you described yourself as "higher than most" on these 3)

That's all I got.  Not a shameful list by any stretch, but I didn't come up with any Nostradamus-like prescience on anyone.

(Now, let me be clear that I am just funnin'.  Certainly your hockey knowledge and ability to evaluate prospects is at least as good as mine -- although that isn't saying much.)

Oh, FFS.  Pysyk, who's now used up his AHL eligibility, is a top-pairing guy based on "pure talent?"

The odds are much, much higher that he's another Darcy mediocrity than a real top-pair NHL defenseman.

In terms of the PP, I'd tie Moulson to Franson's group. Why you may ask?

Moulson is at his best when in front of the net, screening and grabbing rebounds and depositing them in the net. Franson's style of getting the puck to the net would, on paper at least, be a God send for Moulson.

Plus I like the PP2 with Kane-Eichel-Girgs/Reinhart since it gives a different look.

Until Risto is ready (could be this year, but my guess is next), we don't have a top pair--we'll be icing two second pairs as our top-4. I think everyone in the top-4 gets in the 21-23 minute range on average. So by putting Pysyk up top with Bogosian I'm not saying he's a top pair guy poised to get 27 minutes per game.

So Risto has to wait until he is "ready" to be on the first pairing but Pysyk doesn't? If you're going between the two it's Risto over Pysyk with ease.

I get that but weber - franson is just to slow of a D line for me.

I'd go

Risto - franson

Gorges - bogo

Weber/carlo - Pysyk

But if you want your two best D together

Risto - Bogo

Gorges - Franson

Weber/Carlo - Pysyk

Also looking at his interview it seems like he got alot of 1 year deal offers again.

I agree with nfreeman. I see Pysyk as a mediocre talent. Not a top line guy. He didn't even seem like a top pair AHL defenseman last year to me.

I think the story this year is he was playing on the left side in the AHL to learn how to play on that side, isn't it? That would cause some growing pains.

Sure it would slow him a bit. For a whole season? IDK. Doesn't explain away lack of physical presence though. He wasn't a guy that took you to the boards much. Smart player but I don't think he could do top line minutes. For our sake I hope I'm wrong.

Not every player has to be Scott Stevens.

Pysyk seriously impresses me when I watch him play. I have few doubts that had he stayed up with the Sabres last season we would be telling ourselves Strome is not that far behind McEichel right now

That's not what he's saying at all. He's saying we have two second line pairs and he likes those pairings.

Yes, thank you.

Fair. I skimmed over everything after you saying Risto not being ready. My apologies.

I like Pysyk more than Freeman but less than you, TrueBlue.

As I prepare to hide in my bunker, I will say that Pysyk is right now, the best passer on the team and easily the best passing defenseman. I have had conversations with people whose hockey smarts I revere who have dropped names like Teppo and yes, here it comes, Duncan Keith. Now nobody is predicting that he will even approach these players but they believe that it is his realistic ceiling. Pysyk is one of those guys whose stats will be greatly improved by the quality of players around him. A guy who looks like just another guy at the AHL level or as part of the worst team in hockey. He will be a guy that goes unnoticed for 90% of the play until he rifles a tape to tape cross ice pass that springs one of the teams many skilled forwards that can now turn those passes into scoring chances. He is a player who at the end of the year you will look at the old numbers and go wow, I didn't realize he was a plus 30 and had 30 to 40 assists. And the analytics guys, they will be calling him one of the truly underrated d-man in the league.

Yes, Dudacek, I think I am his biggest fan, but then again I thought that Cody was going to be a top scoring winger and that Ennis was too small.
