From Michael Russo Wild Beat Reporter

#Gophers forward Hudson Fasching is close to signing with the Buffalo #sabres, a source says

Until the contract is announced, im still going to be nervous. Call it the "BabCock" effect!

NICE.

as for graduating in May -- those pesky classes should not prevent him from playing a few games over the next few weeks.

(Just read a Tweet indicating that he already has the credits he needs to graduate.)

Not to mention that if they made the NCAA's he wouldn't have been going to classes anyway.

Every player worth a damn has signed with the Sabres. Let's not get our pannies in a bunch over this.

I have been waiting for the Sabres to sign one of the top level guys. This is a good sign.

Better than, say, the local Sabres reporters, none of whom seemed to be in the loop on this?

Boom!

Vogl was first report I saw saying that he would be signed by Monday morning and the fact that Russo is from Minnesota makes him as local as the Buffalo guys on this story but ok.

However, I admit Russo is more connected then any of our local guys but he's more connected then 99% of the beat guys.

Annual Hockey News Future Watch has been out for a while and since no one has mentioned it, and it's not online, I'll do a recap here.

For those who aren't familiar, it's one of the better prospect resources out there because of the source.

Started by Bob McKenzie when he ran the Hockey News it still follows the same principles.

Each NHL team provides its own list of top prospects, which the editors then run through a panel of NHL talent evaluators who give each team a letter grade and come up with a personal top 50 prospect list. Those lists are combined into a consensus top 75.

For the first time I can remember, the Sabres failed to place a player in the top 50.

At 69 overall, and our highest-ranked prospect: Brendan Guhle

2: Fasching

3: Borgen

4: Bailey

5: Baptiste

6: Petersen

7: Estephan

8: Stephens

9: Dupuy

10: Austin

Notable absentees include recent second-rounders Cornel, Carrier, Karabacek and Hurley.

I'm interested in how highly regarded last year's three young defence men are and shocked at the presence of Austin who I considered fringe at best. Ullmark did not qualify because of the time he spent in Buffalo this year.

Also interesting: Colin White, the guy Ottawa took with the pick we traded for Lehner, is ranked 15th overall. Armia was 53.

Compher, Lemieux, Roslovic, and Roy (the latter two being the guys taken with the picks we gave up in the ROR and Kane trades) did not make the top 75.

The overall ranking takes into account 21-and-unders in the NHL and with two second overall picks on our roster, we finished second. Arizona was number one.

Last year we finished fourth overall with Samson (1), Grigorenko (38), and Fasching (75) in the top 75.

This year's five prospects overall, in order: Strome, Nylander, Marner, Provorov, Rantanen

ANy chance he dresses Sat for Coliacovo?   Or report directly to Roch?

Thanks for that, dudacek.

I suppose what matters is that we are ranked second in the overall rankings, and that us not having a guy in the top 50 of the list doesn't mean much, as most of our best prospects have progressed to the NHL, as the write-up lays out.

I would think that Cornel should have been included in the top 100, with the season he is having.

Edit: But I guess our top 10 list was put together by someone from the Sabres, so since Cornel wasn't listed, I suppose they wouldn't agree. Still think he is a decent prospect, wonder if we'll sign him this off season. If we don't this off season we lose him, and I believe he either re-enters the draft, or becomes a free agent. Not sure which.
