James Neal on being a sniper in the NHL:  http://www.theplayerstribune.com/james-neal-predators-sniper/

good stuff.

excerpt from the essay by james neal:

I started my career as a left winger, so I was always receiving passes with the puck outside my body, away from the net. If you’re a playmaker, you might prefer this.

I didn’t know how big of a difference this made until I got traded to Pittsburgh. Dan Bylsma walked in the first day and asked, “Hey, do you think you could play right wing?”

I’m like, “Uh, well I’ve never played it before, so I’m not sure?”

He says, “Okay great, you’re playing right wing.”

Once I got used to it, I really elevated my game, because whenever I shot the puck on my forehand, the release point was closer to the net. I was a threat at all times, especially on one-timers. I ended up scoring 40 goals the next season. So whenever a guy switches wings, it has a lot of implications for how he plays. (Thanks, Dan. You were one of the best teachers I’ve ever had.)

We all know Quebec is going to be the Nordiques but what should Las Vegas be?

Aces

Blackjacks

Gamblers

Rattlers

Hit Men - my favorite

I have to think all gambling references will be squashed. No cards, dice or $$. It will be something corny that we all hate.

OK, that was weird. At first I thought you, Smell, were talking about your hockey career. I thought you'd been burying the lead all these years, because you never talked about playing. Then, when you got traded to Pittsburgh, I thought it was a tongue in cheek post of some kind. Toward the end, the bulb went off and I realized you had cut and pasted. It was quite the ride of a read. I may need a drink.

See, I've never professed to understand hockey's technicalities, and I've never played. But it always made sense to me to play your off wing for the very reasons Neal is talking about.

I thought maybe "Aces" would pass muster, despite that concern.

I also wonder whether they'll harken back to something pre-casino days -- something from the wild west (I've seen Outlaws proffered).

this gave me such a giggle.

As Neal notes, it depends on what kind of player you are.

I would just about guarantee this.

The Wiki page for this franchise-to-be states that one of the principal owners wants to go with Black Knights (or maybe just Knights) in homage to West Point (his alma mater, I infer).

That would essentially guarantee a marketing partnership with Excalibur wouldn't it?

That's a great article  His insight into his toe drag was amazing.

Here's what I know.. the players can only wear numbers between 1 and 36.  The odd #'s are red, the even #'s are black, and Goalie wears #0 and has a green number.

After that.. all bets are off..

All good. But I'm still partial to the Las Vegas Lines. (Not a chance in h-e-double hockey sticks they'll go that way unfortunately.)

Oilers assign Darnell Nurse to their AHL affiliate.

That guy was taken a spot ahead of Risto, yes?

Aye. 2 NHL games to Risto's 112  :D

Wasn't there talk of him going further up like 3-5 pre-draft?
