Definitely. If we could do 6x$4.5m for Risto it would help us immensely down the line.

If Ristolainen signs for 4.5 over 6 or 7, I think we should personally all donate a dollar to that for a signing bonus.  That would be so under the general price for his type of ability.

Here are some comparable to Maata's New Deal from General Fanager

A few comparables to Maatta 6 yrs @ $4.083M:

Brodin: 6 yrs @ $4.166M

Larsson: 6 yrs @ $4.166M

Martinez: 6 yrs @ $4M

Carlson: 6 yrs @ $3.966M

Risto 6yrs @4.5 sounds about right.

I forgot about Carlson's!  Wow, now that's a great comparison.

Thing is, those guys hadn't broken out offensively when those contracts were signed. Brodin had a 17 point season riding shotgun to Suter, Carlson had a 32 point season, Martinez 22 points, and Larsson 24. Risto is currently at 35 with 21 games to go--he's almost certainly hitting 40, and could conceivably get to the mid-upper 40s. All while playing 25 minutes per game as the clear #1D. As a result, I think Risto's contract is going to be well above any of these guys.

What are you thinking for a price? 6yrs@ 5.5/6 AAV?

I was thinking 6 would be the floor, and could be up to $7.5 or so. But, he has slowed down offensively and has looked shaky on D for a month or two, so that ceiling has probably come down unless he blows up the rest of the year. Around $6 million, give or take 500k, sounds about right.

Erik Karlsson had a 78-point season and a 45-point season before signing a deal at 7x$6.5M. Risto should fall in between Maatta and Karlsson but closer to Maatta.

Well, if you account for cap inflation from when Karlsson signed to next season, "closer to Maatta" is still around the $5.5 million mark. Hey, I hope you're right as I'd be ecstatic to get him at $4.5-5, I just think he'll come in over that.

5.5 is Duncan Keith's AAV until 2021, I would be ecstatic if Risto signed for that AAV

If Risto will sign for 5.5 I think we should def do it. I am not sold he will be a true #1 elite defender but I think he has the potential. I think this year we are seeing the disadvantage of playing him 30mins night and also giving him a subpar partner (compared to his skills).  Next year though, I want stability from him.

I would do 5.5 all day for Risto. That's the price of a mid-pairing guy and at worst we can safely say Risto will be a #2 on the top pair.

Oh, and....

I can't believe tonight's Colorado/Detroit alumni game isn't on an NBC station or at least Gamecenter. I would kill to watch this game on tv.

I'm watching it on tv right now, good game so far. So many legends. Rooted for the Avs during the rivalry too.

Sakic still has a wicked shot. Nice goal. Roy looks good. Shanahan looks good too. Forsberg looks like he could play in the NHL still.
