josie Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 People wearing glasses that aren't actually prescription, just clear lenses, for style purposes. Hanson bros had that hipster shizz down early
darksabre Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I'm lost. To punish the player or the team? Why should Wideman be blamed if he had a concussion? Gotta lay accountability where it's due. Who is going to physically drag Wideman back into the locker room? He's obligated to go when asked. Sure, the team needs to press the issue, but there's some responsibility on the player regardless of his condition. Who becomes responsible when the concussed player gets even more hurt while he's being manhandled back to the quiet room?
K-9 Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 Just looked. Oh god. Someone loves their white space/negative space "clean" layout. This means the kids who were in design classes with me now have jobs at major websites. Soon it will all be thin, folksy outdoorsy hand printed style type and arrows everywhere. And triangles. Modern designer peeps love them some damn triangles. We'll call it Saskatchewan cabin chic. Flannel hockey jerseys, craft beard oils for playoffs, man buns. This has me laughing out loud! Great stuff here, Josie. GO SABRES!!!
Weave Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 Seems to me that the easiest fix to this is a rule that states once the spotter has determined that a player needs to be evaluated, he is no longer an active player until the evaluation occurs. Misconduct bench penalty and one man down on the ice to any team icing a player that is targeted for concussion protocol. Call it a minor for the powerplay and I think there would be plenty of motivation to not let it happen again.
LTS Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 No; the league confirmed the concussion: https://twitter.com/NHLonNBCSports/status/695050962289856512 Thanks, I hadn't seen this and in my opinion changes everything. I'm lost. To punish the player or the team? Why should Wideman be blamed if he had a concussion? The team should be punished. But at the same time there needs to be a change in protocol. This would depend on your belief that a concussed player should be responsible for their actions. If you believe this then you believe they are not mentally defected to a point of making poor decisions. I think the onus has to be removed from the players and the team and placed onto the officials. Why wouldn't the spotter call the timekeeper to notify the officiating crew that the player is to be removed from the bench and tested? If the team fails to comply it's a 2min delay of game penalty and additional delay of game penalties stack if the team refuses. The NFL officials have the ability to send a player off the field if they suspect a concussion occurred. It is up to the independent physician to determine if they need the evaluation protocol. Knowing what I know about concussion, I don't think any blame can be placed on a player. Their instincts are to clear their path (which Wideman did). His instinct is to get on the ice. This is all he's ever done. Given how many people don't remember the events surrounding their concussion I think its safe to say they are not in control anymore. Perhaps a lineman needs to step in when a suspected head hit occurs and escort the player to the bench? He clearly got up slowly and appeared to have been shaken up a bit.
Taro T Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 (edited) deliberately. there's the rub. Playing devil's advocate here. If the league DOESN'T give him the proscribed minimum for "deliberately" cross checking the linesman, aren't they giving license to players that have been potentially/possibly/maybe concussed free reign to attack the refs w/ impunity? I do feel bad for Wideman as he got caught up in circumstances. But not bad enough to let him off. He IS getting off easy. Had he just gone out onto the ice & done that to an official he'd be gone for a year minimum. And this is, at least in the last 50 years, the ONLY attack on an official in the NHL by a concussed player. Pretty sure that's not the only time a concussed player had to skate past an official in that time. It's not like punishing him is going to lead to a floodgate of similar incidents. Can you say the same if he's let off? Again, I do feel bad for him, but believe this is one of the rare instances of "zero tolerance" being appropriate. Edited February 4, 2016 by Taro T
Sabel79 Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I have a personal anecdote which makes me somewhat sympathetic to the player and horrified at the conduct of everyone else involved. I play old guy beer-league soccer. Was in goal, had my own teammate put a knee right in the side of my head. Knocked me clean out. I have no memory of anything for an indeterminable amount of time afterwards. I'm told I was out for a minute or two, got back up and finished the game. My wife was there, could tell that something was wrong, and wanted to take me to the hospital. I am told I lost my mind at the suggestion, became belligerent and quite frightening to deal with. It took two guys to manhandle me into the car and keep me still long enough to get to the er. I came to, and my memory picks back up a few minutes after they'd gotten me back to an exam room. I was boiling with anger for no explainable reason, for some time until I started to feel like myself again. I can't really explain it any better than that. My wife's a nurse and knew what the deal was as soon as she saw it, and fortunately for us she had enough people around to help her deal with my addled angry self. This stuff is scary. It's well known, and I have no doubt that even if, in that moment, Wideman decided to flatten the linesman, he wouldn't necessarily have been in complete possession of his faculties. That he was allowed to stay in the game is ridiculous. The team should be taking the hit for it. The league should be taking this more seriously. The PA as well. How the player is left holding the bag alone here is beyond me.
That Aud Smell Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 Thanks for sharing, 79. Scary stuff indeed.

I think the suspension should stick, but the league needs to do something to allow the spotter to force a guy into the dressing room. Edited February 4, 2016 by Eleven

SwampD Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 That last sentence does raise a good point. I think the suspension should stick, but the league needs to do something to allow the spotter to force a guy into the dressing room. Absolutely. Boy, that opens up a whole host of issues.
Stoner Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 Boy, that opens up a whole host of issues. For one thing, right now a team can use its own spotters, whose conflict of interest will be worse if they know that a report to the trainer means an automatic trip to the quiet room, or league spotters. As for league spotters, keep in mind you're replying to a guy who thinks there was a vast right winger conspiracy to allow Hull's goal and not merely they the bed with the call.

Taro T Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 Let's save this one for summer reruns! Nope. It's already been through it's TV-Land phase and it's just not worth tracking down on those random channels in the 340's.
Doohicksie Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) Every time I try to navigate the new NHL site, I want smash my computer. Edited February 5, 2016 by The Big Johnson
Doohicksie Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 I'm talking about the big boy computer version. It's too much like a mobile version for my taste. Ugh.
WildCard Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 The beauty with the old NHL website, is everything was right there. Team websites were all at the top, every game highlight and score was right up top, ever headline I wanted to the right, and if I was interested in a headline featured, I could see what it had without clicking on it. Plus, and I think Josi was quick to point this out, there's wayyyy too much white in there. I loved the old black background, perfectly fit a hockey puck
Doohicksie Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 Plus the proportions are off. The banner with all the game matchups doesn't need to be near as tall as it is; it's just MOAR WHITE SPACE. Ugh. ugh. ugly.
JJFIVEOH Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 I can't even get the stats to pull up much less browse the site with ease. Screw it, there are plenty of other sites for stats.
qwksndmonster Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 I hated the old version so much that I stopped going. TSN is eh, but it gets the job done.
That Aud Smell Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 Oilers destroyed the Senators. And Darnell Nurse #BeatHisAss. Just ask his Dad (and Mom). https://vine.co/v/iJPXqniBY1J p.s. Even The Concept scored a goal.
Iron Crotch Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 Every time I try to navigate the new NHL site, I want smash my computer. They redesign the site every 6 months. Totally annoying since they create learning costs for the users every time they do so.
Mustache of God Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 Every time I try to navigate the new NHL site, I want smash my computer. The new site is abyssal. I understand there's a learning curve with new designs but this is beyond bad. It took me several minutes to figure out who assisted on the goals of the scores I was looking for. It's amazing how much they up this release in the middle of the season. I don't understand the rush to release it like that. Why not make sure it's properly built AND tested and then release over the off-season?
Mustache of God Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 I was also just looking at the standings and am amazed that 7 of the 9 teams composing the "basement" of the NHL are all Canadian (Buf and Columbus being the other two).
