darksabre
Life for Billy Coutu in the 20s... Raffi Torres has 41 games. Chris Simon had 30 games. A few with 25 and 23. Raffi Torres again with 21 games. Then Wideman. Bertuzzi took 20 games for the Moore incident. Lysiak took 20 for tripping a linesman in 1983, for comparison. Life for, oddly enough, attacking two refs at the end of a game.
Iron Crotch
I'm too lazy to look it up, but the rule book says "minimum of 20 games" if the attack is ruled deliberate. I was watching the game live that night and there is little doubt the attack was deliberate. He got the minimum probably because he has no prior history and has been in the league for a while. josie
Life for, oddly enough, attacking two refs at the end of a game. He was also infamous for generally beating the sh!t out of people, including somehow nearly ripping Eddie Shore's ear off. Reputation helps. Good ol' oldtime hockey... Little better than the early 1900s with on-ice deaths and murder charges.

Sucks for him (especially if he was concussed), & I'd've probably given him 40, but it's most likely the right call. & can't see how the ref's union wouldn't have gone ape #### if he got anything less. That Aud Smell
That suspension doesn't make any sense to me. If you're punishing Wideman for intentionally hitting the ref, you suspend him for the rest of the season. 20 games says that they didn't have the justification to give him the whole season, which means they really didn't have any reason to suspend him at all. Agree. Seems like the NHL split the difference here, without acknowledging that the guy was concussed. IMHO, he got the minimum because they factored in his past history AND the likelihood that he was concussed at the time. The fact that all of this is happening without addressing that issue is bizarre.

The fact that all of this is happening without addressing that issue is bizarre. How would you suggest they address it? The player & the team have essentially said (implicitly at minimum through their actions / lack of) that he doesn't have a concussion. How does the league, at this point, overrule them? For the future, they could have a 3rd party make the determination that concussion protocols must begin, but pretty sure they don't have that in pkace at present. (If that IS currently in place, then like Emily used to say "nevermind.")

Eleven
Not enough if you ask me. The minimum should have been the rest of the season with no definitive date of reinstatement next season. GO SABRES!!! I think there's a rule that says it's 20. Also: New Leaves logo is hideous. At least the current one has nice clean lines.
Weave
It was pretty widely reported that the hearing for Wideman was populated by reps from the league, PA, and the officials union as well. My bet is that the suspension was negotiated. Not likely to see another suspension ruling quite like it.
Eleven
According to what I heard on GR during a break, they found a deliberate attempt to injure. 20 is the minimum. Here's the rule: 40.2 Automatic Suspension – Category I – Any player who deliberately strikes an official and causes injury or who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official with intent to injure, or who in any manner attempts to injure an official shall be automatically suspended for not less than twenty (20) games. (For the purpose of the rule, “intent to injure” shall mean any physical force which a player knew or should have known could reasonably be expected to cause injury.) That Aud Smell
But the fact that they gave him the minimum seems to acknowledge that he wasn't all there. Don't let no one acknowledge he was concussed! So dumb.

Also, weave, I believe he is appealing, meaning this wasn't negotiated.

Weave
Former Sabres Grant Ledyard and Mike Robitaille join the players lawsuit against the league for concussions. Ledyard talks of daily headaches, mood swings, depression, and drinks every night to get to sleep. Watching the Montreal feed for the game tonight. They had an interesting conversation about the Wideman suspension. Apparently the league spotter that informs teams of players that may have a head hit told the Calgary bench that Wideman needed to be evaluated. Wideman declined to go to the room. Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun 39m39 minutes ago Other key part of video: NHL says it's a fact Wideman suffered a concussion on hit just before.
