Video of the full play:

Looks like Wideman may have been out of it after going head first into the boards. Either way, not a good look.

Dennis Wideman just intentionally cross-checked a linesman. Might have thought he was a player. I'm not sure I've ever seen something like that.

This is really bad: https://vine.co/v/iilvDv0lZBA

I see a suspension coming.

What a moron, and a jackass to boot. Easily a 20+ game suspension. Any league doesn't take referee contact lightly at all

I don't buy that or the announcer's excuse. Wideman clearly skates directly at that ref for 10 feet leading up to that hit, then throws his hands out and skates away. If it was an accident, wouldn't he have a) not pushed like that and b) looked to see if the guy was alright?

I'm watching the game. Wideman didn't go to the room or even miss a shift. Doesn't seem concussed or anything. He was just frustrated. BTW - the same linesman called Too Many Men on the Flames not too long before that.

No penalty was called on Wideman?

IIRC, Tom Lysiak got 40 games for taking a linesman off his pins on a faceoff back in the day.

If that was 40, this should be a season.

Wow.

Looked accidental to me.

I can't believe he wasn't quiet roomed.

The d-man, I mean. He looked woozy as all hell. From having his head slammed into the glass moments earlier.

Longer view here. And Laviolette being an ass again, calling for a penalty. He should join this board. Feel right at home. Wideman clearly was out to lunch. Temporary insanity. You can see it on his face on the bench.

If Wideman didn't go to the quiet room after that, there's something seriously wrong with the system. Then again Reinhart didn't after that hit from Byufglien. He couldn't even stickhandle on a power play not long after.

Agree 100%. Wideman (I forgot his name when posting) is so clearly impaired there. I suspect he thought that was an opponent. Or a flying gorilla.

Concussion protocols. YMMV.

I gotta disagree with you guys. Wideman looks fine on the bench to me.

Yeesh. Well, okay.

You see the hit? Head on glass - no other point of contact.

:17-:23: He looks super not okay. After that, it looks like he's doing the cement head hockey guy thing. "I'm fine. I'm fine."

There is no other plausible explanation for what Wideman did. I'm not all that familiar with him, but he wears a letter so I infer he's not a guy given to uncontrolled outbursts and violence against officials.

Those faces are just what Dennis Wideman looks like. His eyes look fine. His reactions don't look sluggish. He just doesn't look concussed.

Well, we just disagree then. I think he looks looped. Seeing as he's probably played through 15 or more of those in his NHL career, he's probably a practiced pro at plowing through his bell being run, eggs being scrambled.

Any doubt on the subject is, for me, resolved by the fact that there's no way he does what he did if he's in his right state of mind.

And I checked the Twitter to get a sense of how people/media are reacting: There is very little, if any, talk of the fact that he may have been dinged at the time.

Wideman is not helping the analysis because he's saying that he just didn't see the guy (which is completely contrary to what you can see on the video).

Of course, Wideman is NOT going to say that he couldn't see or think straight after having his head hit the boards.

What a mess.

I would need to see another angle of the collision. I think he was just skating looking down at the ice because he was in some kind of discomfort from the hit. I think he wasn't expecting the ref to be there and reacted when his periphery sensed a body there. Maybe he knew it was the ref, maybe he didn't. I just don't think he's concussed.

Some discomfort from a hit that sent your head into the glass.

Anyway, this take is a lot closer to what I'm seeing.

I just don't get the call for 20 games or whatever. Something was not right.

You can hit your head and not get hurt. My guess is he pulled a neck muscle or something.

The other angle does make it a bit more interesting.  The play is coming directly towards them, which could give some reason for his change in direction.  I do to some degree believe that he wasn't totally aware of who was there.  That and I don't believe that a player who has something out for the refs is going to go after a linesman.  It makes no sense at all, they don't do the things that will put a guy over the edge.  He was angry and a bit out of it from the hit, so he took out the first guy he could find, without realizing who it was right away.

That said, he's going to have to pay dearly for this one.  Even if there was some level of accident to it, the league needs to protect their refs.  The discussion probably needs to start with at least 10 games.  They'll need to send a very clear message here.

Time for my semi-monthly screw Jack Edwards post...

https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/jack-edwards-rips-chris-stewart-s-iq--ducks-forward-hits-back--video-055721046.html

This from the guy who had to change his pants after Lucic steamrolled Miller. Of all the pricks who ever pricked, Edwards is just about the biggest prick. Nothing in this post has anything to do with the fact that I'm in the middle of my second week on night shift and am three beers into the morning. Nope...

yeah, when I saw an article about the Bruins play by play guy going off on someone cause they were fighting someone smaller then them I had to laugh at the hypocrisy.

When your part of a scumbag team, you should open your mouth about other teams not showing proper sportsmanship.

Sure. Happens all the time.

I agreed with the first bolded pieces, but just don't follow to the second one.

To me, the issue here is that there was no good faith effort to assess Wideman for a concussion.
