Rumor: Stamkos was offered an 8yr 68mil (8.5avg) deal by the Lightning.

Yzerman and Stamkos have refused to discuss this rumor publicly.  My guess would be Stamkos would ask for closer to 10mil but at least there seems to be a discussion occurring.

Good for TB, that's what he's worth.

That's a slap in the face.   Stamkos is as good as gone now.

He may view it as one, but it's not. That's right on par with what a smart team would give him. No doubt someone will overpay for him at $10m/year, but that would be a mistake

And, unless he is traded before the deadline, the max value of a $10MM/yr contract is $70MM. For a net difference of $2MM (unless he's expecting to get another deal signed in 8 yrs, or looking for ~$12MM/yr, not much difference in the grand scheme between the 2 offers).

I'm confused. He can't sign contract at $10m/8 years in the offeason for a max value of $80m?

Wait, really? He can't sign a 10X8 this offseason with, say, the Leafs?

I think term is limited to 7 years unless the team had his rights prior to the trade deadline.

Correct.

The 8 year thing is in there to give players an incentive to give a "home town discount" in a manner.

Huh, did not know that. What's everyone's feelings on that rule?

Don't really care.  I guess it encourages both trades and loyalty, somewhat.  Very few players are of the caliber where 7 or 8 year contracts are the options.

Man, where have you been?

I've noticed it for a while but these last few days/week has been pretty harsh for one of the game's best players and a Hall of Fame lock.

Why did this thread suddenly turn on Toews and act like he's not a world-class player?

Since when is the ~8th best player in the league no longer considered world class? Nobody said he sucks, just that he's not top-3/5.

I really wish I had the effort to make a bracket based on the final rosters of each of our teams in the draft thread. Short of that we can always start a Top 10 NHL players thread and vote it down to the top 5

Off the top of my head, the top 5 I have are, in no order

Kane, Toews, Karlsson, Ovechkin, Bergeron

I was the one with the jab, so I'll clarify; this is where I fall as well. I think he's the 2nd or 3rd best defensive center in the league, behind Bergeron and Kopitar depending on the season. Top 10 player on my list, probably, though I'd have to sit and put effort into it to be sure. I just reject WC, THN, and others putting him in the top 3 (I think THN had him first or second?)

Speaking of Florida Contracts, a possible incentive for Stamkos to take less to stay with Tampa Bay?

So what's to stop someone like Toews or Kane as declaring a residence in Florida and getting that tax benefit? They're on the road most of the time anyway, and could spend their summers in Florida
