#freejame Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 Not necessarily. Moving Schenn AND Lecavalier gets them out of cap jail and opens up a spot on the blue line for Ghostisbehere to keep permanently now that Streit is back. With that cap space achieved they have a lot more flexibility. FWIW, I find it slightly amusing that LA traded Brayden Schenn to Philly and Philly sent Luke Schenn to LA a couple years later. Gotta drop that "h," but holy is that a name Quote
WildCard Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 Any chance we can pull Jordan Staal out of Carolina? Quote
inkman Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 Any chance we can pull Jordan Staal out of Carolina? I'm glad these are starting to pop up. Never too early in my opinion. Quote
thewookie1 Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 Jamie McGinn would likely be a well liked rental to a great many teams come deadline day, At 50% retained he'd be only a 1.475 cap hit who plays very well with with good centers. Not to mention he may return in the off season thus being even better for us. Teams that could be interested: CHI (1st no 2nd), BOS (2 1sts, 2 2nds not theirs) and any other playoff borderline team. McGinn(50%) could fetch anywhere from a low 1st to a high 3rd varying on his play going into the Deadline. Ideal type of move: McGinn(50%) & 3rd for other team's 1st (CHI strikes me as potentially a good spot to pull this off, if they can get the cap space) Hopefully at least: McGinn(50%) for other team's 2nd Other potential candidates: Mike Weber - UFA - 1.66mil (50% = 833k) Great price for a depth D-man = Anywhere from a 3rd to a 5th (Comes down to play and the market in general)(Slightly higher due to age) Carlo Colaiacovo - UFA - 900k (50% = 450k) Similar to Weber just slightly different package of skills. = 4th to a 6th (Lower than Weber due to age) Johan Larsson - RFA - 800k (50% = 400k) Potentially skilled bottom 6 forward with a bit of depth position identity crisis. Good at pestering the other team and playing dirty = 2nd to 4th (Not exactly sure, I get many different values for him from other boards and I myself am torn on his spot on the team going forward) David Legwand - UFA - 3mil (50% = 1.5mil) Old guy, been through a lot, might still be useful for depth on a playoff team. = 4th or lower (Granted Nashville might give us a 1st if we ask nicely :) ) Cody Franson - 3.325mil + 1 year (50% = 1.65mil) Powerplay specialist with a year to go on his contract. = Unknown at this time (The market could say anything from a 1st to a 4th, matters greatly on his play and desperation) Quote
Weave Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 I wonder if Pittsburgh circles around to us... Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger In studio @NHLonNBCSports for Pens/Hawks. Pittsburgh still in trade hunt. Looking for another d-man and forward if right fit available. What does Pittsburgh have that we would want? Quote
LGR4GM Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 Any chance we can pull Jordan Staal out of Carolina? Sure but why? We have multiple 3rd line centers and Staal isn't good enough to dethrone Eichel or ROR Quote
LGR4GM Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 What does Pittsburgh have that we would want? Patrick Hornqvist maybe but that's about it. Actually they have Daniel Sprong who wants playing time but was sent to the Q. There is a kid who would be a good fit for Eichel. Quote

There is a kid who would be a good fit for Eichel. I don't think we're getting either of those with what we have. There's not much Pittsburgh has that I would want. They have a few college prospects who will be leaving school after this season but nothing I'm crazy about. Quote

Plus, he knows Dan's system, and has won a Cup with Dan. Sign me up Pittsburgh, on their roster, has nothing that interests me for what we have to offer. I know nothing of their pipeline though Quote

That's a ton of length and money for a 3rd line center when we can pay Larsson 1mil to do almost the exact same thing. Quote

That's a ton of length and money for a 3rd line center when we can pay Larsson 1mil to do almost the exact same thing. I'm one of Larsson's biggest apologists, and I'm not in favor of going after Staal, but let's not get carried away here. Larsson does almost exactly what Staal does in the same way that a Civic does what a Corvette does. He'll be lucky to get to 20 points in Staal's role, let alone 40-45 with great possession numbers. LGR4GM Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 The length is a reasonable complaint about Staal, the price and comparing his play to Larsson are not IMO 6mil for a 3rd line center is a lot of money considering who else we will need to pay in another 2 years. As for the Larsson comparison, Staal definitely is a better player. But he isn't 5million a year better. Quote

Derrico Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 (edited) Are Jack, Risto, and Samson all going demand max contracts right off their ELC? No. But I think we do have to start thinking about their contracts. I'm willing to pay Staal that kind of money today but that contract is far too long for my liking. LGR4GM Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 Are Jack, Risto, and Samson all going demand max contracts right off their ELC? They won't be all making 3mil on bridge deals anymore. Risto can probably ask for 8years 7.5mil. Eichel I would guess will get whatever he wants. Reinhart if he continues to progress could clock in at 7.5mil X7 years (while this looks like I value him at Risto, Risto will get paid in this years dollars where Reinhart will get paid in 2 years from now dollars. The difference is roughly 1mil in my estimation.) So roughly around 31.5million in 4 players counting ROR. Thats about 40% of the cap. So you can have Staal at 6mil or you can have 2 3rd line guys at 2.5mil each. It is just something to think about. Using assets to acquire Staal and then valuing his ridiculously long deal make him a very unattractive option considering the Sabres needs currently. Quote
TrueBlueGED Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 (edited) Are Jack, Risto, and Samson all going demand max contracts right off their ELC? I think so. Even if they don't demand it we'd be wise to pursue it. Long term off ELCs is how you get Erik Karlsson long term at $6.5 million instead of $8.5 million. Montreal insisted on bridging Subban and he proceeded to bend them over on the next contract. Bridge contracts make sense if there are significant questions about a player, but for sure things you're always better off going long term. Edited January 7, 2016 by TrueBlueGED Quote
LGR4GM Posted January 7, 2016 Report Posted January 7, 2016 I think there are ways of getting Staal for 5 years then losing that contract, or most of it at least But why acquire him? What is he bringing that we desperately lack? He isn't a top 6 sniper or a top 4 LHD. I don't think his potential for 15g and 25a combined with his 3rd line center skills are worth acquiring. We have other holes, adding another bottom 6 guy is not going to take us places. Quote

I'm very ignorant when it comes to contracts and I have a hard time valuing players in dollar amounts, so when someone spells it out it's nice. With that being said, give me two third liners over Stall at that point. Quote
WildCard Posted January 8, 2016 Report Posted January 8, 2016 (edited) Very good stuff, Liger and True. Alright, so I've offered a very diverse set of contracts and players to go after in this thread and nobody wants them  So, how about this; everyone make a 3 player, reasonable, list.
