Too much lately leads to petty bickering around here and it generally seems to involve the same 2-3 posters.  If a message needs to be sent to start cleaning that up, I'm all for it.  The summer is the perfect time.  Lesser posting volume makes it easier to find.

I agree with this sentiment and regret that sometimes I have been caught up in the bickering.

It's not unlike dealing with kids, especially during the summer. When there's nothing to do, and they're "bored," they tend to pick fights with each other -- apparently, as a way of passing the time.

In defense of nfreeman: It drives me nucking futs when my kids do this.

Meh.  I didn't see a difference of opinion as demeaning.  He didn't say anything to attack me, just attacked my opinon.  I've got no quarrel with Hoss.  If it's part of a bigger pattern, maybe a suspension was warranted, but I've seen far, far worse behavior tolerated all over the intarwebz.

The moderators do have a bit of a tough job though.  I try not to judge them one way or the other.  I think overall SS is one of the best forums around and I'm sure moderation plays a part in that, even if some people disagree with a particular moderator action.

This board is almost one big disagreement with each other all the time, no problems with that either.

It's the term silly that I found demeaning. To me its a nice way of saying stupid. If he had said I think your totally wrong, no problem. But calling your post silly, is the same to me as saying it was stupid. Well at least from my childhood memories. We where never allowed to use the word stupid so it got interchanged with silly.

Maybe I'm just being silly.

Ah, yes. The word prohibition. (S word = Stupid.) My kids have had to abide by that one.

It's true that the use of "stupid" or "silly" or like slights will tend to take a debate down the wrong path. When you disagree and join issue with someone here (or elsewhere), you're generally according their position an amount of respect -- that it's in the realm of the rational, the possible, but it's wrong for the following reasons. When you say something is "stupid" or "silly," you're often implying, whether you mean to or not, that the other poster has proffered something that is irrational, not possible, and not really worthy of recognition.

I must have a thicker skin than you.  I didn't take any offense to the term whatsoever.  Also, I recognize that my opinion is just that- an opinion.  If someone wants to criticize it because their opinion differs, that doesn't bother me at all.

I'm gonna report you for circumventing the swear filter.  :nana:

My brother's at the time 4 year old had a phase where he was saying "stupid" all the time.  They couldn't figure out where he got it from.  As it turned out he picked it up from Lucy in one of the Charlie Brown holiday specials.

Yeah. It's salutary to coach kids against using the word stupid as regards people, since it's hurtful and unkind.

But I'm actually ambivalent about the trend of which that is a piece, now that most of it is in the rear view mirror for me as a parent (the youngest is now approaching double digits). My wife and I are far from helicopter parents, but I've been reflecting of late on how closely managed my kids have been. In mostly good ways, of course.

It came up in the context of a brother (uncle) telling my kids a story about when we were kids. Nothing beyond PG about the story -- just kids being a little ... um, stupid. Some time later, my oldest remarked to me that the thing that struck her about the story was all the freedom we apparently had to do all those stu--err, ... wacky things. She caught onto the fact that part of the story had involved me being gone from the house, without accounting for myself, for several hours at the age of 12 (or so). She observed that that'd never have happened in our house. And she was right. *Sigh*

Good lead. He's Filipino, as you suggest*** in fact.

Also, here's the original source.

*** Check this out, though: There's a real debate about how to characterize Filipinos.

Interesting stuff. Growing up around the Marine Corps I've met and known a lot of Filipino people. Most seem to be completely Asian or Pacific Islander but there are many that seem to have a mix of hispanic in their background as well and many of them will have a last name that sounds more Spanish than Asian. One of my past Filipino buddies used to call his people the mutts of the Pacific but they make some delicious lumpia. When I used to work at the commissary on base one of the cashiers was Filipino and whenever we had pot lucks for the employees she would always bring in a giant platter of lumpia. Delicious stuff.

One of my favorite coworkers at a previous job was Filipino and she always brought in homemade egg pie. Ugh. That might be the only thing I miss about that job.

Hahahhahaha, good find Aud.

I can't remember another avatar for you; to me, this is what you look like.

As for the S word...

If I want to call someone that, I always spell it st00pid so that people know it's meant tongue-in-cheek.

nfreeman,

For what it's worth, Hoss's post that resulted in his temporary suspension from posting warranted such an action.  It seemed to me that it was indirectly calling a poster silly when one says that the post was silly, but maybe that's just me.

I posted up thread my thoughts at the time prior to your announcement of the suspension post.  Your post made it clear that this was the end result of many cautions on your part.

I do think Hoss contributes greatly to the discussion, but his delivery, at times, is a bit over the top.  I attribute that to his passion, not so much his youth.  Hopefully, he will be back and contributing again shortly.

I have learned yet another lesson from SS. When I want to call someone stupid, I shall say don't be silly.

Or how about this lesson. You call a mod an A-hole, you get banned. Seems pretty simple to me.

I've never understood the hang up on a word.

I say something is stupid.

I say it's ignorant.

I say it's patently absurd.

I say it's valueless.

I say it's silly.

What difference does it make? Point is.. if i think it's stupid, that's my opinion.

Using more flowery and softer language is like using makeup and airbrushing.

The original concept hasn't changed.

Is that you, Donald?

Seriously.. what kind of response is that?

I'm not even sure what you are getting at there with that comparison.

I don't really appreciate being compared to Donald Trump..

I was actually with you.

Donald Trump is stupid.

I also think that GMTM is "anti-sentimental" in that he actually doesn't want to bring back players that were previously with the team.

Aren't Moulson and McCormick Sabres that TM traded away but are now back?

I'd expect that he has ZFG whether or not a guy was previously here. Will the guy under consideration make the team better than what he's currently got? is the only factor in the decision-making process; with "better" meaning is it closer to winning a Stanley Cup? if it is, it's better.

(That said, there is a reason that anybody who's a former Sabre is a former Sabre, and that reason will factor in towards whether it makes sense to bring the guy back.)

And back to Soupy; me, I'd rather have Franson for 2 years and no cost but $'s, rather than Soupy for 1 and the loss of some other asset.

Donald trump is always calling things "stupid" I believe. Think it was a joke

Well if that's the case..

I don't pay any attention to what the windbag says so I wouldn't know.

Yes.  Funny.  Haha.  Get it?

Actually, these two lines seemed reminiscent of the esteemed Republican front-runner lately:

What difference does it make? Point is.. if i think it's stupid, that's my opinion.

Using more flowery and softer language is like using makeup and airbrushing.

If you did one of those quizzes of "Who said it?  Donald Trump or LTS?"  It would be hard to tell for those two lines.  Trump is famous for his bluntness, and that was similarly blunt.

Sheesh.  Everyone is so touchy lately.
